The Expedition of Lewis and Clark

Procedures:

  • As a group you need to decide what President Jefferson is asking of you.  Jefferson wrote you a lengthy letter describing the expedition.  The specific instructions were contained in that letter.  The four of you should read the instructions and come to consensus about what tasks are being asked and what decisions need to be made.
  • You should each make, for your own expertise, a list of tasks the president is asking of you, a list of needed supplies, what considerations will you need to make during the trip, and any planning that needs to be done ahead of time.  Make sure you also think about how you will communicate with the people in Washington while you are gone.
  • You will then need to compile your lists before you communicate your needs to the president.  For instance, you probably don't need to each ask for a compass even though you might each use one.  One compass for the entire expedition party will probably be enough.
  • As a group come up with one communication to be sent to President Jefferson.  You should be as specific as possible about what you need and how you will be using it so that the president can justify your requests to Congress and so Congress can then fund the trip.
