![]() Lewis and Clark map from American Memory collection of the Library of Congress
"We were now about to penetrate a country at least two thousand miles in width, on which the foot of civilized man had never trodden...I could but esteem this moment of my departure as among the most happy of my life." -- Meriwether Lewis Two hundred years ago Meriwether Lewis, his friend William Clark, and their "Corps of Discovery" set out upon an exciting journey. They were commissioned by Thomas Jefferson to explore the vast wilderness that is now the northwestern United States. During much of their journey, Lewis and Clark had no idea what they would encounter next. The story of Lewis and Clark is a story of teamwork, failure, success, and the willingness to take risks.
This unit was written to celebrate the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's expedition. It is aligned to South Carolina's fourth grade standards.
