New Developments

On Stardate 54885.4, the Argo stopped at Starbase 503 to affect repairs to its warp core, which had been damaged in a crystal fracture some days earlier. The layover also provided an opportunity to complete the ship's standard overhaul early, to complete long-delayed crew rotations, and to provide much-needed shore leave for the ship's crew.

However, developments at the station soon threatened the ship's ability to fulfill any of this. Shortly after disembarking, Commander Saotome found herself the victim of an old-style combat simulation known as "paintball," a feud between certain factions on the station which would soon force the Argonauts to take up arms themselves to restore order to the station. However, soon the fun ended, with the signaling of a fleetwide alert; the Borg had been detected in the Klingon Empire, and all starships were to be ready for immediate attack.

During this alert, Starbase engineering personnel discovered the presence of an unknown form of energy creature within the starbase reactor core. These creatures were feeding on the base's power, and threatened to completely drain the starbase of power within hours. This development overshadowed the news of the Borg defeat, as the creatures defied every attempt to remove them from the station. With the help of the Argo's newly arrived science officer, Lieutenant DeNova, it was determined that the creatures were in fact from another dimension of subspace - shortly before a series of subspace tears began to form within the Badlands, and threatened to drag the entire station out of this plane of reality.

Finally, desperate measures led the starbase personnel to manually eject the entire affected reactor. Believing that the creatures were in fact intelligent, however, Commodore Kramer ordered the Argo to undertake a risky endeavor to send them home. The ship caught the reactor in a tractor beam, and then used its own main deflector to provide a conduit for the creatures to leave the reactor and travel into the subspace distortions. The creatures complied, and the distortions were sealed.

The Argo completed its overhaul without further developments.
