Valgilla

"The Dark One" "Queen of Midnight"
Goddess of Night and Darkness

"Now they will know why they are afraid of the dark...
Now they learn why they fear the night..."

-- Master of Shadows Dak-hamid Usman Iqbaheed,
Spoken just before the destruction of the Temple of Lampronus in Bor Berengal

The Knights of Shadow (as the priests of Valgilla are known) have dedicated themselves to the task of smothering all of Taranche in darkness.  They fanatically adhere to the teachings of the Scrolls of Twilight, an ancient scripture which describes a time called "the Void", said to have been before Taranche, before the gods, when Valgilla was alone the ruler of the cosmos.  The Scrolls teach that there will come a time when Valgilla again is ascendant, and her faithful strive to bring that time to pass.  Besides vigilantly opposing the church of Lampronus, priests of the Dark One prepare themselves for the coming Void.  They practice survival skills in lightless environments, and are skilled blind-fighters.

Upon entering service with Valgilla, each member of the Knights of Shadow express their devotion to her cause by plucking out one of their eyes and offering it up as sacrifice.  When a priest reaches the rank of Master of Shadows, he again makes a personal sacrifice by plucking out the other eye.  In addition to these personal sacrifices, the priests are expected to bring the bounty of Valgilla to others.  Slaves purchased for sacrifice, captives taken in combat, and willing volunteers all offer up their eyes to Valgilla as monthly sacrifices.
