Rebel Age

On the gallows, walk to the opposite side, and pull the hanging coat-hanger-thing. A set of shackles will lower from the top of the gallows, and if you hurry, you can grab on and catch a ride to the top. Note the lovely tusked skulls at the top. And if you look to your right, you’ll see a cave with star-shaped metal bars in the doorway, obviously a prison cell for the condemned. Have you figured out what happens on the gallows yet? With Gehn watching from above, a native chieftain watching from his golden seat on the opposite cliff, and hundreds of natives looking on in fear and awe, it must be quite a scene…

Take a peek into the cell. Looks like a native, waiting to be executed. The prisoner isn’t too happy to see you at all--you might even be the executioner! Next to the prison cell, you’ll find a small iron wheel in the rock face. Turn it, and you open the cell. But incredibly, the prisoner has disappeared. There must be another way out. Turn the cell inside out. (Isn’t that what the prison wardens in the movies always say?)

You should find a small metal hook under the grate in the floor. Pull it, and a secret passage appears in the wall of the cell. Take the passage downhill until you reach the end, by the water. Then, turn on the light you see on the wall, and follow the path back to the top, turning on lights as you go.

The game often stutters, or hangs up here on many users’ machines. A patch available from www.riven.com will fix the problem.

But where did the prisoner go? Head back down the passage, and you will see a door hidden in the wall. Open the door, and follow the passage down into the Moiety’s hidden room. (See the dagger symbol in the front of the room?) There is a circle of stones here with an animal painted on each stone.

Here’s where your research comes in handy. You’ve found five “eyeballs” in your travels. Each had a symbol on it, and each either made a sound when you touched it, or was otherwise associated with an animal you’ve seen on the islands. Start by looking in your notes for the symbol for “1”. It was on the eyeball in Gehn’s lab, which he had yanked out of the lagoon. And that eyeball corresponded to an angelfish, as you learned by looking into Gehn’s periscope from his underwater throne. Therefore, the first stone you must press is the angelfish.

Likewise, you next press the stone corresponding to the eyeball with “2”, or “D”, painted on it. The “D” eyeball made a buzzing beetle sound, and was found in a basin of water shaped like a beetle.

Next, the “KI” stone… “KI” is “3”, and that eyeball made a frog “chirp”. The frog is difficult to spot, for some people believe it looks like a bird. It’s on your left as you face the altar. It has a long neck, with an eyeball on top.

Fourth, the “upside-down-L”, or “4”. That eyeball made the sunner sound when you touched it, so press the sunner stone.

Finally, the fifth eyeball, or the “whark”. The whark stone is in the front of the room. Press it.

If you get all five stones right, you will trigger a reaction from the front of the room, a giant tree-stump that appears to have been protected by the amorphous water. The water flows out along the sides of the room, and a panel opens to reveal a Linking Book. Go ahead. Touch it.

You find yourself looking upon a beautifully organic-looking tree-village with majestic bird-creatures soaring around it. Enjoy the view, then turn around. You’ll see an effigy of a man holding a book, with dozens of daggers sticking in him. Take a step closer, and touch the book…

Pfft.

You’ve been darted, and as the world goes black, you see two rebels moving towards you….

…and you regain consciousness long enough to realize that you’re being taken to the Big Tree in the lake…

…and you finally awaken in a prison cell inside the Tree. Peek out the window and then out the front door. Once you’ve checked out your surroundings, Catherine’s servant will appear with your books, and some notes from Catherine. Read them carefully, and note the code for the manhole cover under the telescope.

The servant will return with a book that will link you back to the secret room on Forest Island.

Head out of the secret room, up the passage, and pull the piston so you can exit. Leave the prison cell and head right, down a metal stairway and then down a ladder to the wooden dock below. You have the code for the domes and the telescope, and all you need to do now is figure out how to power up the linking books inside the domes. It’s time to make a final run for glory.
