Powerhouse Museum opened in 1988
has history
that goes back to 1879
originally located at The Garden Palace, in the
Botanic Garden. The museum started of,
a space merely for exhibitions. The government was really proud of the space
due its popularity hence they setup Technological, Industrial and Sanitary Museum,
the 'grandparent' of
powerhouse museum. 1882 the palace was burnt down
and eventually relocated to a small building at Ultimo.
Problems arose when the space
cannot accommodate the crowds who were swarming into the museum and the
exhibitions as well. Thanks to Sydney Morning Heralds (as the SMH claims),
the premier Neville Wran acknowledged the problem and
searches was carried out to relocate the museum.
When the government kept objecting Premier’s suggestions, it took the
premier almost 50 years to find a new location for
PHM, an old abandoned powerhouse in Ultimo. The whole museum is approximately 200,000 square
meters big with 5 levels to accommodate exhibits. Though the museum is
equivalent to three international soccer fields as PH
M
website described yet it can only display 10% of its collection at a time.
PHM has approximately 385,00, yet it is still growing as donation and
acquisitions are still happening.
In the lights of its mission, the museum is using a ‘hands on’ concept
different to the traditional ones, whereby visitors have the opportunity to
press and touch buttons when interpreting exhibits.
