Le but à atteindre est le centre. "In medio stat virtus".
The aim is to reach the center. "In medio stat virtus". It's in the middle that we find the strenght. To reach
a balance between the extremes. Neither too much nor not enough. Always the right balance to be at ease
in one's own flesh.
I felt like naming this picture
"anouchka" and I don't know why. When we look at an abstraction, we rather feel
something than see objects. One can feel movement in this drawing. This moving
is done by the circles and the loop and also by the repetition of the designs.
The contrast between the violet and the yellow increases that impression. Some
unknown objects seem to be carried away by that movement.
We can stay for a long time in front of this drawing and, by looking at it
very carefully, we can discover all kinds of things. I called it "jewels" because
that's what it looks like at first sight. We see necklaces and bracelets. If
we focus on the dot where all the lines are directed to, one would say that they
are all vacuumed and that they will disappear through that hole. Some lines
draw the profile of faces. All the lines converging in the same direction add
depth to the picture. Notice the independence of a little group on the top right:
they refuse to follow the movement, or they watch it from far, as spectators...
Même l'arrière-plan a l'air
This drawing looks like a sculpture, doesn't it? Even the back wall seems
in relief. I named it "bird eggs": one can see seeming shapes of birds and all
kinds of eggs. Would this answer the question, "Is it the egg or the bird that
came first?" And why not both of them together? In the human race, the egg is
fertilized inside the woman's whomb instead of outside. Too much philosophy for
such an humble drawing!
Look at this beautiful symetrical object in only three colors: blue, red and
white. But of course you see other colors because these three will mix in your
eyes and produce many violets. Although I made this piece many years ago, I
discovered only last week that we could see a beautiful king or pharaoh sitting
right in front of you on his throne with his legs opened and his arms raised as
if preparing to bless someone (unless he is gesturing while making a speech).
This drawing would make a beautiful background! If you use it as a background,
you will see new forms appear because of the adjunction of the left side with
the right and the top with the bottom.
Here's a "reserve" work with rubber-ink
and blue ink. On a white sheet of paper I began by "reserving" some parts with
rubber-ink. I let it dry completely (for those who would find too long to wait
for it to dry, all you have to do is to begin another project while waiting...).
I covered the whole sheet with blue ink diluted in a lot of water. Once dry,
I "reserve" other parts again with rubber-ink. I let dry and then cover with
another layer of blue ink, this time not so diluted, and so on 4 or 5 times.
In the end, when all is very dry, I take the rubber off by rubbing with my
fingers and I go round certain chosen shapes with black China ink and a pen.
Sometimes it's a total surprise because the rubber-ink doesn't always protect
the sheet completely. Come on, try it!
Ce serait trop long
I named this
drawing "butterfly". There are some similarities! When I drew it though, I
didn't think of butterflies. I was thinking about creating a balanced organization
of forms and colors. In the foreground you can see shapes made with straight
lines with two warm colors, red and pink. In the background you have circular
shapes with mainly cold colors (blue, violet...). I discovered a drawing system
that allows me to create curbs using only straight lines. It would be too long
to explain that here. If I knew how to handle animated drawings, I could use
that to explain how I proceed. Maybe, one day...
I made this "decor" picture on a yellow-orange sheet of paper and I drew the
lines with a red ball-point pen. No way I could erase anything with that. You
can see a design that repeats itself, the shrinking of one producing the widening
of the adjacent one. They're not the same size all over so they seem to move.
And they're all decorated differently from one series to the other. I used
squares, circles, lines, x's and triangles, and if I use more lines it gives a
darker reddish color and where I don't use any you get the yellowish one. So
even if there are only two colors, there seems to be more.
puis faites l'inverse. Quelquefois, on dirait deux personnes entièrement
différentes. Ici, il en va de même. Les deux dômes ne sont pas pareils.
The power of the lines! There's almost hypnotism in this drawing. I named
it "domes", but one could say "eyes". Have you ever noticed how people seldom
have two identical eyes? For some people, the difference is remarkable. Try the
following experience when looking at the photograph of someone. Hide the left
side of the face and look at the right side. Then do the opposite. Sometimes
we would think we're looking at two different persons altogether. Here, in this
drawing, it's the same. The two "domes" are not the same.
