Brian Mayer

Conversation On Route 23 North, November 1987

He slumps into the back seat of his old Ford
Station wagon...one he has owned for
Years
Gaunt...thin...weak
A shell of the man he once was
Another return trip from the hospital
Behind the wheel
I make a feeble attempt to commence with
Small talk
Chatter...banter...shoot the breeze
More for my own benefit than it was for his
I understand that now
I bring up the property we planned to purchase
Together
He continues to stare out of the window...blankly
Eyes unfocused...hollow gaze on what has past
In a whisper of a voice...close to tears
I strain to listen
"There has been a change of plans"

Brooklyn born and bred, Brian Mayer now resides on the north shore of Long Island NY with his wife Nancy and their four children. He spends his "free time" writing and playing the blues.
