Locomotive Horn Signals
"LONG"When train is stopped. The air brakes are applied and pressure is equalized.
"LONG LONG"Train releases brakes and proceeds.
"LONG SHORT"Warning when approaching points where view is obscured.
"SHORT SHORT"Acknowledgment of signals or begin forward movement.
"SHORT LONG"Inspect the brakes for air leaks or sticking brakes.
"LONG LONG SHORT"Approaching point to meet or wait for other trains. Signal will be given at least one mile before reaching the point.
"SHORT SHORT SHORT"When train is stopped: means backing up, or acknowledgment of a hand signal to back up. While moving: stop at next station.
"SHORT SHORT LONG"Engineer on second locomotive to assume control of air brakes.
"SHORT SHORT SHORT SHORT"A request for a signal to be given or repeated.
"LONG LONG LONG LONG"The flagman may return from West or South.
"LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG"The flagman may return from East or North.
"LONG SHORT SHORT SHORT"Instruction for flagman to protect rear of train.
"LONG LONG SHORT LONG"Train is approaching public crossings.
"SHORT SHORT SHORT SHORT SHORT SHORT"A succession of short sounds as a warning to people or animals on track or that an emergency exists.
Not all railroads use the above signals.
