"SPDC authorities have systematically repressed
and relocated Muslims to isolate them in certain areas. For example,
Rakhine Muslims have been forced to donate time, money, and materials
toward buildings for the Buddhist community. There now are certain
townships in the Rakhine state, such as Thandwe, Gwa, and Taung-gut, which
are "Muslim-free zones." Muslims no longer are permitted to live
in the areas, mosques have been destroyed and lands confiscated." MORE Source: US.Department of State

"The
sharp increase in the level of anti-Muslim violence during the
period covered by the previous report (some of which the Government
may have tacitly supported, contributed to, or even instigated) has
abated, there were reports that restrictions on Muslim travel and
worship countrywide have increased, especially since the fall of
2001."
The impact of violent attacks against Muslims last year in Burma should be
high on the agenda of the U.N. special envoy when he visits Burma next
month, Human Rights Watch said today.

Relations and the Stateless Rohingyas
By Imtiaz Ahmed
I have lately been
disturbed by two developments. Firstly, at the very moment when
'realism' has lost its post-Westphalian glories and is suffering
from disrepute, the stateless people continue to be at the mercy of
the state. In the case of the Rohingyas it is even more pathetic for
their refuge across the border brought no change to their
sufferings.
The
following historical facts prove that the Rohingyas are indigenous
people of Arakan. "Muslims arrived and settled since last 1000
to 1200 years in Burma” (The SLORC Publication ' Thasana Yongwa
Htoonkazepo’ p.65).
