NEWS FROM HOME: APRIL, 2007

Where everyday is Friday.

What a difficult on again/off again winter we have had. However, as it always is here on Long Island, should be a wonderful one. Looking forward to all that is great about the Island.

The Board of the Middle Country Retirees Assoc. has decided to change our meeting schedule. It seems that the expenses incurred for 8 meetings a year are not realized when put up against attendance. Winter months are very hard for our members and many times we have had to cancel meetings without being able to reach everyone. So the decision is to hold six (6) meetings a year, September, October, November, March, Apriland May. The meetings will still be on the fourth Tuesday of the month and the luncheons are still to be held in June and December. This would save us approximately $250/300.00 and a lot of work.

We are also going to institute an advertising campaign for our members. Many of us have not gone totally into retirement and continue to work at a business of our own. These members will be allowed to advertise on the back of all future Newsletters if they send us their business card or a small advertisement no bigger than a business card. We can copy them onto the back of our Newsletter which goes out approximately 4 times a year (don’t hold me to that). A small fee ($15.00) is asked to cover the additional cost of printing. In this way we can alert all our members of the services offered to them by former colleagues and members can contact the vendors themselves.

Reminder that September 7, 2007 is our first annual Belmont outing. If it works out as I think it will, we could have one every year at that time. Belmont is lovely in the fall and the price is certainly right. We have enclosed a flyer if you are interested. We have only one bus on order and it will hold approximately 50 persons. Here in Selden we already have about 20 persons who are interested. First come first served. Hope to see you all then.

Applications for membership will be going out in June. Please return them ASAP. Thanks!

Our 20th anniversary luncheon will be held at the Watermill Inn on June 5, 2007. The menu looks great so get back to us with your reservation quickly. We are looking for small items to include in the raffle along with small baskets. Please bring them to the luncheon if you have something you would like to donate.

Remember if you have made any changes to your address, e-mail or phone please write to me so that I can update your record and keep these newsletter coming: Joan O’Grady, 35 Jackson Avenue, Centereach, NY 11720 or valdinon@optonline.net.

Michael Daly is working on our website almost daily. If you have not visited it yet, please do so. It is a fantastic piece of work: https://www.angelfire.com/ny5/mcra.

Our Wall of Remembrance is now getting very large and we are constantly updating it with colleagues who have passed away but never listed. Everyone who has worked for MCCSD is placed on the Wall. We now need to decide if it should be printed in the biennial directory or if only on the website since that is much easier to keep updated. It is also easily accessible. Please let us know how you feel about this. Write to Michael at mteachd@hotmail.com

We are accepting nominations for the MCRA Board: President, Vice President, Secretary (2), Treasurer, Recording Secretary. The present board has indicated it would serve another year so are automatically nominated but we will accept any new names by e-mail to Michael.

Selden Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold their Scholarship Golf Classic, Friday August 31, 2007 at Heatherwood Golf Course. If you are interested contact Mike McCormick 471-5138.

The District publication The Bulletin Board and the 07-08 School Budget is available at www.middlecountry.K12.ny.us.Remember to Vote May 15th, 2007.
