GIF vs. JPEG:

T his option lets you compare GIF and JPEG versions of your file and choose the best overall format for your image.
You can then either select one of the samples or experiment with one of the other GIF or JPEG format options to produce a converted file.
GIFs generally are preferred for illustrations with solid colors and JPEGs are best for photographic subjects.

Note:

J PEG files does not support transparency or animation.
If your file has either of these features, you may want to choose a GIF-only option.

GIF - High Quality:

T his option creates three GIFs: 256 colors, 128 colors, and 64 colors. They all using a Selective palette with dithering    (noise patterns added to simulate more colors than are actually in the palette).
A GIF with 256 colors will usually look more realistic than one with 128 or 64 colors, but will be larger.
Dithering creates the appearance of more colors and detail in an image, but can also increase file size.
The higher the dithering percentage, the better the quality.

GIF - Low Quality:

T his option creates three GIFs: 64 colors, 32 colors - both dithered - and 32 colors non-dithered.
These often look fine and will be smaller than GIFs produced with 256 colors.
Dithering creates the appearance of more colors and detail in an image, but can also increase file size.
The higher the dithering percentage, the better the quality.

GIF - Web Palette:

T his option produces three GIFs with varying amounts of dithering: 90%, 50%, and 0%.
A higher dithering percentage creates the appearance of more colors and detail in an image, but can also increase file size.
All three use the standard "Web-safe" 216-color palette, a subset of the Windows and Macintosh systems' palettes.
This option can substantially degrade the quality of your image.

Note

T he background image on our fixed background page was originally 458K Bitmap and after we "optimized the image" it is now a 26K JPEG.
So you can see the difference on how fast your page will load with an optimized image. This process is also an excellent way to send pictures and images as attachments with email.
