We are all a product of our times. "Founding Fathers, Secret Societies" gives us a fresh view of the men who founded our country, what their individual thinking was based on, and their ties not only to Europe but to a specific Native American Nation - the League of the Iroquois. The authors have chosen to focus on one specific national symbol - that of the Great Seal. The reverse side of the Great Seal, which appears on our one dollar bill, is given special attention. The authors posit that through the decoding of the reverse side of the Great Seal we will find a blueprint that conveys the secret destiny of America.

In their introduction, the authors note that often the destiny of a nation can be found in its national coat of arms, or its Great Seal. The intention to have a two sided seal was signed into law on June 20, 1782. For whatever their reasons, the State Department and Congress have, by and large, kept the reverse side of the coin in the dark - not in use, and not written about, as the obverse (front) side of the coin is.

The obverse side of the Great Seal is dominated by an Eagle, while the reverse side bears an eye in a triangle, over a pyramid, and two Latin mottos. It should be clear to anyone that there is some sense of significance here.

The State Department did not allow public access to its department files on the Great Seal until 1891. Early historians, and those later historians that depended on sources predating 1891 often ended up being misinformed. It is also interesting to note that cutting a die of the reverse side of the Great Seal, and making a metal impress for use on official documents, has never been done.

The authors devote a significant chapter in this book to the influence of the League of the Iroquois, and its Great Law of Peace. The League of the Iroquois represented five Indian Nations - Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Cayuga, with a sixth Nation - the Tuscarora, joining in 1714. Peace between its people was the foundation of the law for this league. Peace meant right action and great good. There was freedom of expression in political and religious matters, with all religions accepted. Women were allowed the right to participate int he political structure.

The symbols for this league are gone into at great length, and include the use of the Eagle. Word of the Iroquois League was spread by Benjamin Franklin, through his auspices as a printer. There was an Anglo-Iroquois alliance formed to stop the threat of France's domination of the New World. An added bonus to this chapter is the artwork done by Mohawk artist John Kahionhes Fadden.

In their chapter describing the different secret societies, the authors noted something that was fascinating to me, and that is that the American Indians were well schooled in Masonic lore and ritual! There are stories presented of lives being saved with the simple expediency of the Natives recognizing a Masonic hand signal - it is indeed small world.

Also discussed are links between the Freemasons and the Knights Templar. I think we do have to remember that when we look at esoteric organizations, it is highly probable that we may (a) find the roots of one organization within another, and (b) we may find one organization influencing another. Another society that is relatively well know was also discussed, and that is the Rosicrucians. The Illuminati are briefly discussed, as their connection to the founding fathers is felt to be tenuous at best. The final society that is mentioned is Yale University's Order of Skull and Bones (patterned after a German secret society). The Skull and Bones society exists only for its own good - it does no public service, and makes no donations. What it does seem to do is be of great help in securing positions of power and prestige for its members.

Part of the chapter on secret societies deals with specific founding fathers, and their backgrounds, including those of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Of interest here are photographs of the Masonic Aprons belonging to Washington and Franklin. There is a chart listing those founding fathers that can be identified to some extent as Masons, including nine of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, thirteen of the signers of the Constitution, and thirty-three of the General Officers in the Continental Army. Astrological charts are presented for Washington, Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson.

There is an in-depth discussion of the three committees that were formed to develop the template for the Great Seal, including the committee members, and what their contribution was thought to be. Of interest is the numerological discussion of the reverse of the Great Seal on the one dollar bill.

The symbols used on the reverse of the Great Seal are discussed from both a mythological and a symbolic point of view. The authors suggest that the renewed interest in the reverse side of the Great Seal suggests (or perhaps reflects?) an alteration in American values. If this is true, then America is going through a paradigm shift.

How do the symbols on the reverse of the Great Seal act as a blueprint for America's vision? Theosophists and Rosicrucians hold the belief that America represents the thirteenth step in evolution. America is said to be nurturing the sixth "root race". By the year 2600 c.e. the seeds of this root race will have germinated, and a great part of America's destiny will have been fulfilled. At the same time, other nations are evolving towards their own destinies. The reverse side of the Great Seal is said to express the vision of self-transformation.

The author's have included two appendices - one on the Great Pyramid, and one on the nature of talismans. Both contain in-depth background information for the symbols on the Great Seal, as well as how they may be interpreted/used.

As with all material, the reader will take with him/her what they will, and leave the rest behind. There is a great deal of information here, well researched and well presented. This work will stand alone as a reference, or act as a starting place for new research.
