The Beginning

The next day as I wake up I find that there is a new nurse by my side. “What? Where is the other young lady?” I ask as I try and sit up.

“Sh, Kala, hush, it’s all right,” the nurse says.

“You called me Kala,” I say in astonishment.

“Yes, I did, I’m an undercover nurse, I work for the military, we’ve been called in to get you out of here, but first we need some evidence I’ve installed cameras and microphones all around the room. You just take it easy, everything’s going to be just fine now,” the lady says. “There’s a new doctor today too, he’s also with the military. Besides the evidence of Jason’s crimes we have to find out what we’re up against as far as getting you out of here.”

“Okay,” I say as I close my eyes. I am woken an hour later. “What?” I ask.

“I have to wake you each hour to see that you haven’t lost consciousness,” she says.

“Oh, okay, thank you,” I say. “May I go back to sleep now?” I ask.

“You really should try to eat and drink,” she tells me. “Try and get some strength back,” she says.

“Okay,” I say as I sip on a glass of fruit juice. After I have finished it I ask. “Is there a phone around here?”

“Yes, on the table, do you want to call your husband?” she asks.

            “Yes,” I say.

“Okay,” she tells me. I am handed the phone and I dial the number. The phone rings once and is quickly answered by a man that I don’t know.

“Go ahead, we’re listening,” he says.

“I want to talk to Kevin, this is Kala,” I say to him.

There is some mumbling in the background and then Kevin comes on the line. “Kala, Darling, God what’s happening, are you all right?” he asks.

“No, I have a bad concussion, and that’s kind of putting Jason’s sex plans in deep freeze for at least eight days, until I heal. What’s going on? I mean, when can I come home?”

“In a little while, Sweetie, in a little while, we’re just trying to gather some information so that we can get you out of there safely,” Kevin says.

“Okay,” I say. “Look, I really shouldn’t talk, but I wanted to call you and let you know that so far I’m all right.”

“Okay, Kala, just hang in there, we’ll have you out in no time flat, Baby, I promise,” he says.

“I know you will. I love you so much, Kevin,” I say.

“I love you too,” Kevin tells me.

            “Bye,” I say.

“Bye,” he says as he hangs the phone up. I go right to sleep after that.

Kevin is thrilled to hear that not even Jason will take sexual advantage of her while she’s hurt like she is. However, he’s sickened to hear that Jason has managed to jeopardize her life again. He takes a long nap and dreams of the two of them being happy together, like they were when they first got married, a few short months ago. He can’t believe that their lives have gone so far downhill so quickly since January. The other guys have had their wives for a while now, and no one ever bothers them. But, even though Kala has a stalker of her very own, and now has been kidnapped, he wouldn’t take back marrying her for the world. He knows deep down how awful it would be if he were still alone. He drifts off into a peaceful sleep and stays in such a state for several hours.  He sleeps through the rest of the day, and night and most of the next day. His mother finally comes in and wakes him up, just to make sure that he’s not dead.

“Kevin, Darling, get up, the police want to talk to you,” Anne says.

“What?” he asks as he lifts his head.

“You’ve been asleep for nearly a day, everyone is concerned and the police want to talk to you,” Anne says.

“So, what day is it?” he asks.

“It’s Saturday, the eighteenth of May,” Anne tells her son.

“Thanks,” Kevin says. He rushes downstairs to where the officers are. “Yes?” he asks.

“We’re getting the reports about what kind of protection that house has. It’s very impressive. His guy has really gone all out,” the chief says.

“Is that supposed to make me feel better?” Kevin asks.

“No, it’s supposed to impress you about how jealously this guy guards his property,” the chief says.

“Hey, let’s not forget here that he has something that belongs with me,” Kevin says.

“That’s what all the protection is for,” the captain of the force says.

            “What?” Kevin asks.

“It’s all brand new stuff, just installed a few months ago,” he says.

“What are you trying to say?” Kevin asks.

“In other words, this wasn’t a spur of the moment idea, this guy had been planning this kidnapping for months,” the chief tells Kevin.

“That’s not making me feel any better about this situation,” Kevin says again.

“I know, I’m sorry,” the chief says to him.

“So, what exactly are we looking at?” Kevin asks.

“Armed guards, attack dogs, remote controlled landmines, it’s an absolute nightmare. Until we have more information about the area, and who and what we’re up against, then getting in there is going to be very hard, and getting your wife out alive is going to be nearly impossible, unless we kill everyone in the whole complex, and we’re trying to avoid bloodshed at all costs.”

“Oh, I understand, but what are Kala and I supposed to do while you get your information?” Kevin asks. “Just stand around while that animal takes advantage of her?” he asks.

“No, of course not, with the nurse and doctor there they will provide some protection for her against such attacks,” the policeman says.

“Yes, but we already know that he won’t touch her so long as she’s injured,” Kevin says.

“We’re hoping to have this conflict over before Jason gets his hands on her,” the policeman says.

“Great, that’s wonderful, but please, notify me the moment that it’s all right for me to go up there,” Kevin says.

            “We will,” the policeman says.

On Sunday, the nineteenth of May, I wake up some time in the late afternoon to find Jason by my side, and the nurse nowhere in sight. “What are you doing here?” I ask.

“Now, is that any way to greet your husband?” Jason asks.

“You’re not my husband,” I say.

“Oh, I know that it doesn’t feel that way to you now, but you’ll grow used to the arrangement in time,” he says as his hand slides up my leg. I jerk away. “Aw, you poor thing, you’re scared, don’t worry about such things, I intend for us to get to know each other very thoroughly once you’re back to normal, until then, however, I am going to have to be content to watch you from something like afar, for most of the time. Then again, it might be to everyone’s advantage if I got to know you a little more right now, that way once you’d healed there wouldn’t be so much questioning about when what would happen. Here, let’s try this for a while, just lie still Kala, and let me take care of you.”

“No, get away from me,” I say as I turn away from him.

“Oh, come now,” he coaxes me.

“Please leave, Jason, my head hurts horribly,” I say.

“Well, if you wouldn’t reject me constantly, and if you’d open up and let me get to know you, then you wouldn’t turn away and it wouldn’t hurt,” Jason says as he tries to rub by stomach.

“Let’s get something clear here, Jason, you kidnapped me, I do not love you, I never loved you, and I never will love you. You’ve repeatedly proven that you will attack me everyway that you can. I do not find you attractive in any meaning of the word,” I tell him. “You will never have the right to touch me in any way. If you force yourself upon me you will only be setting yourself up for more prosecution and trouble than you already have, now get out of this room.”

“Ooohohohohoho, Kala, Baby, you must me terribly confused and upset to talk to me like that, so, why don’t you just take a nice nap?” Jason asks.

“Get out of this room,” I tell him.

“Very well, but I do so only to keep you from hurting yourself further,” Jason says as he leaves. After I am certain that he has left I drift off to sleep.

For poor Kevin the eighteenth, through, twenty-second are very trying days, information about the security of the estate where Kala is being held captive is being brought in and plans are made and then thrown out. Finally a plan of action is agreed upon by all parties, which are to be directly involved in the siege of the compound. It is further agreed that Kala will be taken right to a hospital, and Kevin will be brought in the ambulance with her, and kept with her for her stay there. The plan is set to be carried out on the twenty-third. Kevin is flown up on the twenty-second and everything is made ready for the attack at dawn. Kevin is close enough that he can see the horrible place where Kala has been kept enslaved for the past several days, and yet, he is far enough away that he is in no danger.

                                    *            *            *            *            *            *            *

For me, the next several days pass in relative terror, Jason’s visits become more frequent, he takes to touching my body in highly indecent ways, he does this because he knows that he can get away with it and I can’t put up too much of a fight about it. Both he and I know that if I move, I will hurt my head, or some other part of my body. My head wasn’t the only thing that got banged up when I swerved to avoid the obstacle in the road that day. I have no real options open to me if I want to get away from him. He always asks the nurse to give us some time alone. With each passing day Jason’s language and manner becomes more and more suggestive. Every time he leaves the nurse comes back and gives me something that makes me tell her exactly what happened. Then she gives me something to control my nightmares, and gives me a small dose of a sleeping medicine. I wake up some time later, usually to find Jason by my side again, but sometimes she is there.

On the morning of the twenty-second, Jason comes into my bedroom with the doctor. “Kala, make this easy on yourself and everyone else and just be still. The doctor only needs to give you quick examination. That’s all,” Jason tells me.

“You leave the room, permanently, and I’ll stay perfectly still,” I say.

“Huuuu,” Jason sighs annoyed. “I’ll leave you alone with the doctor and nurse during the exam, but you must behave for them.”

            “Very well,” I say.

“Call me once it’s over,” Jason says.

“All right,” the doctor says. Jason leaves and the doctor hands me a note. It reads:

All is well; you’ll be out of here tomorrow, just get through the rest of today.

I nod to him in understanding. He does examine my head and other injuries, and then calls Jason in.

“Well doctor, what’s the news? May I be with my angel tonight?” he asks.

“Is her head still bandaged?” the doctor asks. “Are there spots on her arms, legs and other body parts that have bruises and cuts on them?”

            “Yes, there are,” Jason says.

“Then you may not sleep with her, she’s still in far too delicate a condition for such things; perhaps in a day or two she will be a little more stable for such activities, but certainly not tonight,” the doctor tells him.

“Well, then I shall have to content myself with sleeping beside her,” Jason says.

“That too is not advisable,” the doctor says.

“Then what may I do with her?” Jason asks.

“Honestly, the less you do the better, noise makes her head ache badly, and she’s in no condition physically for any kind of romantic activity, and it’s honestly best if there is no one else in the bed with her, that way no one can turn onto her arm or something that’s injured and make it worse,” the doctor says.

“Very well,” Jason says as he and the doctor leave the room. I go right to sleep late that afternoon and dream of all the wonderful things that Kevin and I will do together once I am back safe in his arms the next day. I wake up late that night and the nurse is beside me. This surprises me because she normally leaves me during the later night hours to get some sleep for herself.

“Sh, everything’s going to be just fine. Here, you should eat,” she says as she hands me a tray of food.

“Okay, what’s going to happen tomorrow?” I ask.

“Early in the morning you will be taken out of here,” she says.

“Will I be awake?” I ask.

“It would be better if you were to sleep through it,” she tells me. “You and your husband will be taken right to a hospital,” she says.

            “Okay,” I tell her.

“I’m going to give you something to make sure that you’re asleep during the attack,” the nurse tells me.

“I wish that you wouldn’t,” I tell her.

            “Why?” She asks.

“I want to see my husband as soon as I’m brought out of here,” I say.

“I know, but if you’re not awake then it’ll be easier to get you into and out of hiding, and you won’t worry yourself to death,” she says.

“I know, I just want to see my husband so badly,” I say as I start to shed tears. The nurse lets me cry and tries to comfort me as best she can. I eventually wear myself out. She gives me some medicine and soon after that I drift off to sleep, to the thought of being near Kevin the next day.
