DR. DON COLBERT ON FASTING :
TEN FASTING TIPS

  1. Headaches, bad breath, and run down feelings are signs that the fast is working. During a time of fasting, the body purifies itself, feeding off of impurities and pollutants in the body. After approximately three days, the headaches begin to cease and, after approximately five days, hunger also stops.

  2. Fasting throughout history has been a prescribed method for healing. Animals cease to eat, as God instinctively ordained, when they become ill. Hippocrates was an outstanding physician in his time. He is called the "father of modern medicine." He set standards followed by doctors today called the Hippocratic Oath. Hippocrates taught his students to rely on diet and exercise instead of drugs. He personally fasted often. Moreover, he advised people to only eat one meal a day.

  3. Fasting will increase your faith. The same member with which you speak the word of faith is the same member with which you eat. That is the mouth (Romans 10:8-10). Faith must be released out of the mouth. Fasting and faith are first cousins. They are related. The tongue speaks faith and eats food. Some unbelief cannot be broken without fasting. Each day that you fast, your faith is increased.

  4. Drink plenty of fluids. Bottled mineral water should be taken in large quantities, before and during the fast. This will help flush poisons and impurities out of your system. Approximately one gallon a day should be used in the cleansing process.

  5. The hardest day of fasting is day one. The second hardest day is day two. It does not get harder, but it actually gets easier. Your body becomes purified of poisons and toxins. When you feel tired, there is poison in your system. You need to use regular methods of colon cleansing.

  6. Fasting strengthens your inner will. James says, "a double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Let not that man think that he will receive anything from the Lord" (1:7-8). Your becoming hungry is not a reason to break a fast. The only reasons you should break a fast are for medical reasons or if God has dealt with you that it is time to break the fast. You will not starve to death by fasting.

  7. During the fast, focus on the Word of God. Most of the direction that God speaks to His people comes through the revelation of His Word. When Jesus fasted, He was tempted by the devil, but in every case He used the Word of God to overcome. Without exception, God has spoken to me through the scriptures each time I have fasted. When you become hungry, if you will read from the Word of God, you will be satisfied of physical hunger.

  8. During a fast, your prayers need to be specific. I encourage you to write down your greatest needs and pray specifically over each need during this time of fasting. As God impresses you with direction and guidance, jot down what God speaks.

  9. The victory often comes after the fast is over. When Jesus fasted, He was tempted by the devil. The power of the Holy Spirit came upon Christ after the fast. "And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee and news of Him went through all the surrounding regions" (Luke 4:14).

  10. Wisdom should be used in breaking the fast. There have been reported cases where people have fasted for long periods of time and have broken their fast with meat and other foods hard to digest. This lack of wisdom has cost some people their lives. I suggest that you not eat meat and other hard to digest foods the first few days after a fast. Instead eat foods which are very easy to digest. The sooner the first meal passes through the body, the more effect it has as it carries out poisons collected in the intestines and stomach. The best laxative foods for a fast are fresh, sweet fruits, such as grapes, cherries, or raw vegetables. If you experience backaches during fasting, it is probably due to your kidneys and not your back at all. Drink more water, and the pain will go away. You need much more water when you fast.

Set aside this time of fasting in dedication to the Lord. Our purpose is to draw close to Him and receive His guidance. He will help you as you commit each day unto Him and pray.

PRE-FAST DIET

Fasting is the Bible way to humble yourself. In addition, however, there are physical benefits to fasting, such as weight loss, though fasting is not to be confused with dieting. Below is a pre-fasting diet which can help you prepare your body for a long fast. It not only helps cleanse the body from toxins, but stimulates metabolism of your body. You will probably lose seven to nine pounds in one week, depending on your present body weight.

PRE-FAST DIET SOUP RECIPE

  • 6 large green onions (scallions - but we used regular onions)
  • 2 green peppers
  • 1 or 2 large cans of tomatoes
  • 1 bunch of celery
  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pkg of Lipton Onion Soup Mix

Season with salt, pepper, curry, parsley, etc., if desired, or 6 bouillon cubes. (Note: Half of this recipe was made and used according to following instructions by two people for four days. We kept it continually hot in a crock pot.) Cut vegetables in small to medium pieces and cover with water. Boil fast for ten minutes. Reduce to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. This can be eaten anytime you are hungry from day one through day seven. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want at any time of the day. This soup will not add calories; the more you eat, the more you lose. If eaten alone for indefinite periods, you would suffer malnutrition. Fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during day.

Day One-All fruits except bananas. Your first day consists of all the fruit you want, except bananas. Cantaloupes and watermelons are lower in calories than most fruits. Eat only your soup and fruits the first day. For drinks – unsweetened tea, cranberry juice, or water.

Day Two-All vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed with all the fresh, raw, or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat green, leafy vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas, and corn. Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner time on this day, reward yourself with a big baked potato and butter. Eat all the soup you want this day, but don’t eat fruits.

Day Three-Mix day one and day two. Eat all the soup, fruit, and vegetables you want. You CAN’T have a baked potato this day. IF YOU HAVE EATEN AS ABOVE FOR THREE DAYS AND HAVE NOT CHEATED, YOU WILL FIND THAT YOU WILL HAVE LOST FIVE TO SEVEN POUNDS.

Day Four-Bananas and skim milk. Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you can on this day along with your soup. Bananas are high in calories and so is the milk, but on this particular day of our diet, your body will need the potassium, carbohydrates, proteins and calcium to lessen your craving for sweets.

Day Five-Beef and tomatoes (or salad). You may have 10-20 ounces this day. Try to drink as many as 6-8 glasses of water this day to wash away the uric acid in your body. Eat your soup at least once this day.

Day Six-Beef and veggies. Eat to your heart's content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have two or three steaks if you like with green, leafy vegetables but no baked potatoes. Be sure to eat soup at least once this day.

Day Seven-Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables. Again, stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat soup at least once today.

THE END OF THE SEVENTH DAY, IF YOU HAVE NOT CHEATED ON THE DIET, YOU WILL FIND THAT YOU HAVE LOST 10-17 POUNDS. IF YOU HAVE LOST MORE THAN 15 POUNDS, STAY OFF THE DIET FOR TWO DAYS BEFORE RESUMING.

This seven day eating plan can be used as often as you like. As a matter of fact, if correctly followed, it will clean your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being as never before. After only days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter, at least 10 and possibly 17 pounds, and have an abundance of energy.

Continue this plan as long as you wish and feel the difference. This diet is a fast, fat-burning diet. The secret is that you will burn more calories than you take in. It will flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being.

This diet does not lend itself to drinking any alcoholic beverages at any time, because of the removal of fat buildups in your system. Go off the diet at least 24 hours before any intake of alcohol.

Because everyone’s digestive system is different, this diet will affect everyone differently. After day three, you will have more energy than when you began, if you do not cheat. After being on the diet for several days, you will find your bowel movement has changed – eat a cup of bran and fiber. Although you can have black coffee with this diet, you may find you don’t need the caffeine after the third day.

DEFINITE NO-NOS. NO BREAD. NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, NO CARBONATED BEVERAGES – NOT EVEN DIET DRINKS. STICK WITH WATER, UNSWEETENED TEA, BLACK COFFEE, UNSWEETENED FRUIT JUICES, CRANBERRY JUICE AND SKIM MILK (ON THE DAY IT IS ALLOWED).

The Basic Fat-Burning Soup can be eaten at any time when you feel hungry in the day. Eat as much as you want and as often as you like. This soup will not add calories. Eat all you want. The more you eat, the more you lose. NO FRIED FOOD OR BREAD. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of meat (absolutely no skin on the chicken).

Any prescribed medication will not hurt you on this diet. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef on only one of the beef days. You need the high protein from the beef on at least one day.

BREAKING YOUR FAST

Breaking your fast often is the most difficult and most important part of fasting. Therefore, you must understand how to break your fast before you even begin.

You must reintroduce foods gradually to realize the greatest health benefits of fasting. You see, your digestive tract has been at rest. That means hydrochloric acid and pancreatic enzymes may not be available to help you digest proteins, starches and fats right away. Therefore, the longer your fast time, the more slowly you should come off of your fast.

Here’s an eating schedule for coming off of your fast, if your fast is three days or longer. If the fast is only one or two days, you can eat fruit the first day, then go on the liver support diet for two weeks, as outlined in chapter 8.

THE FIRST DAY AFTER YOUR FAST - Eat fresh fruit such as apples, watermelon, grapes or fresh berries as often as every two to three hours on the first day that your fast is broken. However, don’t eat papaya or pineapple on the first day after a fast. These fruit contain strong enzymes that may upset your stomach. Fruits with the highest water content, such as watermelon, are the easiest to digest.

THE SECOND DAY AFTER YOUR FAST - On the second day after the fast is broken, have fruit in the morning. For lunch and dinner, have a bowl of fresh vegetable soup for lunch and for dinner. Eat slowly and chew your food very well. Be sure not to overeat. Be sure you continue to drink at least two quarts of filtered water a day. You may also continue to drink your juices once or twice a day.

DAY THREE AFTER YOUR FAST - On the third day, you may add to the fruit and vegetable soup a salad and/or baked potato. You may also add a slice of whole-grain bread such as Ezekiel bread, brown rice bread or millet bread.

DAY FOUR AFTER YOUR FAST- On the fourth day, you may introduce a small amount (1 or 2 ounces) of free-range chicken, turkey, fish or free-range lean meat.

Just remember, the key is eating slowly and chewing very well. Drink water thirty minutes before your meal, but not more than 4 ounces with your meal. Most importantly --- don’t overeat.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

  • WE ARE HERE TO SERVE GOD AND OUR FELLOW MEN (I CORIN 10:24; PHIL 2:3-5).

  • WHATEVER NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE WE SOW IN LIFE WE WILL REAP; THEREFORE WE MUST SOW POSITIVE SEEDS AT ALL TIMES (GAL 6:7).

  • IF WE SOW BOUNTIFULLY, WE WILL REAP BOUNTIFULLY (II CORIN 9:6).

  • IN ORDER TO GET WE MUST GIVE, CHEERFULLY (LUKE 6:31; II CORIN 9:7).
