Rose stood in the falling rain, and began to think about her new life. Where would she go? Rose had no one to turn to, and had no one to rely on but herself. If anyone found out that she was still alive, she could get into big trouble. But, she thought, they can't drag me back, kicking and screaming. Mother wouldn't want to create a scandal. And, she thought, there is no way I could EVER marry a man that tried to shoot me, just because I found love elswhere. Even if he loved me, in his own demented way. Rose saw the image of Cal, running after her and Jack with the gun, and shuddered once again.
The Capathia finally was docked in New York, and the stewards told everyone to prepare to leave the ship. Rose glanced at the pier, and was startled, my God, she thought, look at all those people! There had to be at least a thousand people crammed onto the pier, and the area surrounding it. Rose began to think that the chances of her slinking away unnoticed by anyone were getting very slim. Rose watched the gangplank, and observed that the first class passengers were passing by.
Rose was stunned by how many people from first class survived! She began to pick out the people she knew that passed her, Lady Duff Gordon and Sir Cosmo, Madame Aubert and Madeline Astor, the Countess of Rothes, and OH! Rose's heart sdropped, there is Mother! Rose could tell by the way Molly and Cal half carried, half drug her Mother dwon the walkway, that Ruth was suffering. Rose also saw that her Mother's eyes were red and puffy, obviously from crying. Cal was even openly crying, the tears leaving jagged streaks down his face. Rose couldn't believe it. She knew that her mother would miss her, but Cal? Could it be that Cal really isn't all that bad? Maybe he really was concerned about my survival, and not about retailiation. Rose dismissed the thought, as the memory of Cal slapping her came back to her, with stunning clarity. Rose could almost still feel the sting. I wonder what would have happend if the Steward hadn't been there Rose thought...Rsoe continued to watch the group make their way down the gangplank, not feeling sorry for Cal whatsoever. Cal kept glancing around, then looked straight at Rose. Rose ducked, waited a few moments, and then slowly rose again. She saw the group had passed, but Cal was still stealing glances her way. Did he see me, Rose pondered, no, he couldn't have...
Rose ducked into her jacket, and pushed her hands deep into the pockets of her jacket. She was beginning to shiver, and she couldn't stop. Rose's hand struck something heavy and cold. What in the world, Rose began to pull the item out of her pocket. Rose let out a gasp! It was the Heart of the Ocean! Rose racked her brain trying to figure out how she ended up with the necklace. She remebered that Cal had given her this jacket before she had been placed on the lifeboat. So, that is why Cal was chasing me. He wanted his precious necklace back! Well, he won't get it! Rose stashed the necklace back into her pocket. Anger began to boil inside of Rose, disbeliving that she was gulliable enough to fall for Mr. Caledon Hockley. Well, at least I am not with him now, and Rose said a silent thank you to Jack. A steward appeared and told her that it was their turn to leave the Carpahia, Rose slowly walked down the gangplank, careful not to let her face be seen, as she stepped off the gangplank, Rose left her old life behind, and began her journey as Rose Dawson.
