Jack was frozen, right to the bone, the only thing that was keeping him warm at the moment was Rose's sweet voice, singing "their" song. Mentally, Jack was singing along with her, "Come Joesphine in my flying machine..." Jack felt the constant rocking of the waves hitting him, and bobbing him up and down against the board. Jack began to delve into the memories that he had made since boarding the Titanic. From when he first laid his eyes on the lovely angel of his, to when he made Rose promise to survive. Suddenly, Jack realized that Rose's singing had stopped. Jack struggled to pull himself out of his trance, and then realized he was under water! Jack kicked toward the surface, and came up next to a half flooded lifeboat. Jack looked around for Rose, and couldn't find her. He then spotted a lifeboat nearby, and slowly swam towards it. Jack was too weak to even catch his breath, and he knew that he couldn't go about looking for Rose. Jack could see a lifeboat rowing about fifty feet away. Jack knew that there was no way that he could get their attension, he couldn't even speak. So, he heaved himself up into the flooded boat with the last amont of his energy, and let the blackness take over.

Jack awoke with a start. He was laying on his back, and when he looked up, saw a half dozen men peering down at him. "Whaaaa..." Jack was completely confused. Jack shook his head, trying to figure out what was going on. Am I in Heaven, Jack thought?? A tall dark haired man looked down at Jack and extended his hand to him, "

Hello, you must be one hardy man! I am Captain Stanley Lord, and you are on board the Californian. We found you this morning in a lifeboat that was half full with water."

Jack looked up at him, "yes, I remember crawling into it last night. I had no idea that I would survive. Is there anyone else on board that survived the Titanic?" Jack's hopeful eyes peered into Lord's.

"No, all of the surving passengers and crew members are on board the Carpathia. Our ship was stuck in the middle of ice last night, not far from here. This morning we heard about what happened to the Titanic and came over to see if we could help. The Carpathia arrived a bit before us, and left with the passengers. We were left with the duty of picking up the debris left from the sinking."

"Is there any possible way to find out if anyone I know survived?" Jack questioned Lord.

"I can see what I can do, my wireless operator can call the Carpathia and see for you. I can't guarntee if they can respond or not though. I would imagine that the Carpathia is busy with the survivors sending telegrams. But it is worth a try though," Lord reached into a pocket and pulled out a piece of paper and a pen, "here, write down the names of the people you would like to know about, and we will see what we can do."

Jack took the pen and shakily began to write:
Rose DeWitt Bukater
Fabrinzio DiRossi
Ruth DeWitt Bukater
Caledon Hockley

Jack sighed, and handed the list back to Lord. Lord summed up the list, and walked out the door, with the rest of his crew in tow. Jack sat up in the bed he was sitting in. He began to peer around the room, and was amazed to figure out that this was the Captain's room! Wow, Jack thought, he gave up his room for me. I can't believe this. Jack tenderly stretched out his arms. Then Jack noticed the tips of his fingers had turned blue. Curious now, Jack pulled his feet out from under the covers, and to his amazement, his feet were almost all black. Jack knew that this must mean his toes and fingers had frostbite, and were most likely to be amputated. Jack quickly stuffed his feet back under the covers, unable to bear the grotesque sight anymore. Jack then heard footsteps coming down the hall, and Lord walked in.

"Well, it seems that Ruth DeWitt Bukater, and Caledon Hockley are the only survivors from your list. Caledon has searched the ship all over for Rose--and you I might add. He hasn't found her. She is believed to have gone down with you, and the ship. Do you want the word spread out that you did survive?" Lord put his hand on Jack's shoulder, "I'm sorry."

Jack's clear blue eyes crystallized with the threat of tears, "'you--you--you mean Rose didn't survive?"

"No, I'm sorry." Lord was at a loss of words, not able to even image such a tragic loss.

"She promised, she promised....She promised that she would survive. She has got to be there, on that ship. She told me she would survive, she did! I know Rose wouldn't have given up..." Jack's eyes welled over as he came to the realization that Rose didn't survive. "Can you leave me alone for a wile?" Lord nodded, and walked out of the room and shut the door just as he heard Jack burst into heart wrenching sobs.
