this film combines horror and science fiction to
create a unique experience. borrowing generously
from films such as hellraiser and alien, this is
a truly frightening film. the story goes like this:
an advanced spacecraft called the event horizon
mysteriously disappears while orbiting the planet
neptune. after nine years, the ship reappears in
the same place. a military convoy is sent to neptune
to find out what happened to event horizon.

lawrence fishburne turns in a competent performance
as the no-nonsense captain leading the expedition.
he is your typical "you do your job, i'll do mine"
tough-as-nails leader. there is little character
development among the rest of the crew, save for
the mysterious doctor who created event horizon,
played by sam neill.

there is something sinister about the doctor and
the captain seems suspicious of him from the very
start. after the crew boards the event horizon,
they realize that something horrible has happened
to the people who were there.

members of the convoy start to have terrifying
visions, each vision representing an individual
or event in that person's life. the convoy evacuates
event horizon after retrieving the ship's log.
the final log entries of the event horizon crew
are chilling, as all the members of the crew are
driven insane by an unknown force.

the doctor has no idea where the ship went for
nine years. members of the convoy start showing
up dead and the captain plans to blow up event
horizon. the mysterious force wants to keep them
there, and a battle between good and evil ensues.
the ideas in this film were highly derivative of
better films, but this is a horror flick in essence
and a truly frightening one at that.

i would recommend this film to horror buffs or
to anyone who wants a good scare. the science
fiction is pretty much swept under the rug after
the first half hour. there were some great special
effects in this movie, but special effects do not
make a movie. i found the exploration of people's
personal demons to be the film's strongest attribute.
