Trojan Football Fans....
Sadly, the Las Animas Trojan football season ended Saturday with a 34-13 loss to the Wiggins Tigers.
Travel conditions were great for our 3 1/2 hour trip to Wiggins. We stopped at a Loaf & Jug in Limon and soon
the parking lot filled up with Las Animas cars painted with blue and
white Trojan slogans such as "Go Big Blue" and "LA All The Way". Some
of the high school girls tied blue and white ribbons on all the
vehicles
and we looked like a convoy of blue and white as we all continued the
drive to Wiggins, ribbons waving in the wind.
Las Animas fans continued
to arrive right up to the start of the game. It was great to see so
many familar Las Animas fans turn out to cheer the Trojans on.
The game
was intense and when Zac Wagner made the first touchdown of the game
with Zack Atkins kicking the extra point, it seemed as though we had
more fans there than Wiggins from cheers. Wiggins followed with a
touchdown and then the score was tied. Las Animas scored again and this
time I could not see through the crowd or hear the announcer so I was
not sure who made the touchdown, just knew the extra point was no good.
One of the parents told me it was James Lewis but the newspaper said
that Andrew Abdulla made it. We were in the lead 13-7 and it was
half-time.
The second half proved disastrous for the Trojans as they
failed to complete any of their drives to score again. Wiggins on the
other hand capitalized on our errors and scored 27 more points to win
the game 34-13.
Although the Trojans are not going to make it to the
championship game, they have had a fantastic season. My heart goes out
to the team and the coaches for this loss. Win or lose, I am very proud
to support the Las Animas Trojans. Hats off to the players and coaches
for their outstanding display of team spirit, good sportsmanship, and
hard work. Also to the fans for their support.
Basketball and Wrestling
begin in a few weeks and next year's football season is only 10 months
away. My grandson will be a freshman next year so I can hardly wait.
