Las Animas High School Football Fans,
What a exciting night for Las Animas! The school song, "Come on
Animas, Come on Animas, Fight on for our fame" echoed throughout Trojan
field as fans cheered the Las Animas Trojans on as they played Peyton.
After their defeat last week, the team practiced hard to correct
mistakes and improve their game. They were a very determined team of
players this week and to show their unity, the team bleached their hair
out. Rumor has it that if they win the game tonight, the coaches will
get bleached.
The Trojans seemed unstoppable with touchdown after
touchdown. They were on fire and the score at the end of the half was 41-14.
For the first time in a very long time, the Las Animas High School Band presented a half-time show. Tonight, under the direction of Band teacher, Nathan Knoll along with the help of volunteer Bob Clark, the band, accompanied by the cheerleaders carrying flags made with Las
Animas colors, marched onto the field, performed a couple of routines and played a number of songs including "Come on Animas", "Louie Louie",
"Hang on Sloopy", and "Land of 1000 Dances". The band is very small but they did an awesome job and with half-time over the game resumed.
Peyton
scored again early in the second half but that was their last as the Trojans continued run the ball in for more scores. At the end of the 4th
quarter, the Las Animas Trojans led 69-21 and became the 2001 South Central League Football Champions.
This winning game was an awesome way to end the regular season for all the players.
I was sad when I
realized that this was the last "home" game as well as "night" game in regular season for the outstanding Senior players Chris Bogner, Zac
Wagner, Dustin Ramsey, Adam Harris, and David Duran. It has been a long
time since Las Animas won a League Football Title. I bet Coach LaSalle
was smiling down on Las Animas tonight.
Greg Koenig and his assistants
Jon Routh, Joe Frausto, and Ron Lopez have done an outstanding coaching
job this year. This team has worked diligently to get to this moment.
They began their fitness program this summer and all their
determination
and hard work has paid off.
They are the league champions and they are going to the playoffs. Last year the Trojans also made it to the
playoffs but the team had a lot of problems as well as injured players. This year is a different story. The Trojans have trained hard and have done an outstanding job both offensively and defensively.
I guess I will have to wait until Monday at school to see if the entire team, including the coaches are blonde. I wonder if they are trying to fool the opposition into thinking they are "dumb blondes" like in the jokes.
They are anything but "dumb blondes" and I'm sure they will play their hearts out when they host Holyoke in the first round of the playoffs next Saturday at 1:00 P.M.. Should be a great game. Bobbie Walker Smith "67"
