WORK RELATED TRAVEL ADVICE
People in their home environment live in a state of equilibrium with locally occurring microorganisms, the altitude and climatic conditions of their region. However, this equilibrium can be upset by factors such as microorganism, seasonal changes in climate and unusually stressful situations. The physical and environmental changes encountered during international travel may upset this equilibrium to an even greater extent: sudden exposure to significant changes in altitude, humidity, microorganisms and temperature, aggravated by stress and fatigue, may result in ill-health and an inability to achieve the purpose of the journey. The risks associated with international travel are influenced by characteristics of the traveller (including age, sex and health status) and by characteristics of the travel (including destination, purpose and duration).
Forward planning, appropriate preventive measures and careful precautions can substantially reduce the risks of ill health . Employers have an obligation to assess the risks of travel to their employees (Health and Safety at Work Act.) and to take necessary precautions for the journey.
Workers may require prophylaxis for malaria or vaccination prior to travel. Their families may require travel health advice prior to travelling abroad. Advice regarding sunburn, heat exhaustion, dehydration, skin cancer and damaging effects of ultraviolet light, Deep Vein Thrombosis prevention during flights, should be taken into consideration amongst others such as environmental effets.
