Paul, Teresa, Jen and Yong have now been home for 4 days. The flight home took 12 1/2 hours with a 2 hour layover in Tokyo. The most exciting thing about going through the airports was trying to get through security with two small children. When we left Guangzhou we were given a package with breakfast. We decided to wait until we got to the gate to eat it. Well, we lost the bottles of water and yogurt when we went through security. I also had to give up my 1/2 ounce bottle of hand sanitizer. We had also taken 6 bottles of Wahaha to keep Jen and Yong happy on the plane. The containers were about 4 ounces so I wasn't sure if they were going to make it through security. When I pulled out the zip-lock bag with the Wahaha, both children spotted the bottles and started yelling "Wahaha, Wahaha." The security people recognized what the drink was and were laughing and talking with the children and let the bottles through. We, of course, had to give Jen and Yong a bottle right there to keep them happy!
When we reached Seattle, we were quite relieved to be back in the US. Going through immigration was an experience, not because of the adoption paperwork, but because there is another Paul Robertson who is in some sort of trouble with the law! It took us quite a bit longer than we thought to get Paul safely back into the country. We cleared customs about 8:15 am. Yong is now a US citizen and legally ours. We will probably re-adopt him in Washington State, just to make things easier in the future.
Alasha and Dustin picked us up at the airport. It was good to see them and to have extra hands to get the luggage out to the car. Yong immediately went to Alasha and soon warmed up to Dustin.
Alasha, Jen and Yong getting acquainted
We had to make a quick stop at Target by the South Center Mall to get a second car seat. Within about 15 minutes both children were asleep. Jen continued to sleep when we got home and slept for about 3 hours.
Yong woke up when we got him out of his car seat and was pretty excited to see his new home. Our cats were very excited to see us and wanted to meet Yong. He wanted nothing to do with them. He was terrified of them. We put them away while we tried to feed him lunch, but he was still very worried that they would reappear. After lunch, Paul took a nap, with the cats, while I tried to help Yong figure out our home. At about 2:00 pm, I couldn't stay awake any longer so Yong and I took a nap.
When we woke up, I tried again to introduce Yong to our cats. I introduced our Siamese cat first. Since she is smaller than our other cats I figured that she would be less threatening. Yong enjoyed the interaction and was soon petting and talking to her. By the end of the day Yong was enjoying all the cats.
Yong is happy most of the time. It doesn't seem to bother him that we don't understand all of what he says. He continues to tolerate our non-understanding. We took Yong to Sears on Saturday and got him a new wardrobe along with a new camera. He liked being out in public. He does like to run and play, even in stores.
Getting ready for a walk
Yong really enjoys Cheerios and bananas, but not at the same time. He won't eat congee any longer. He will try most things, but hasn't really expressed an interest in other foods. We are still looking for some favorite. Tomorrow we will go looking for Wahaha or some substitute.
The members of our ward (church congregation) have loaded our freezer with meals! When they ran out of space, they put them in a friend's freezer. We appreciate their support.
We celebrated Yong's birthday on Friday. Carly and a friend came over for dinner. It was good to have all our children around the table. I don't think that Yong understood what was going on, but he did have a good time blowing out the candles on the cake. Jen had fun helping him blow.
My first birthday in the USA!
Candles to blow out and chocolate cake!
Carly brought him a present of a cute, soft bear. We had got him a small piano keyboard toy in China and he and Jen enjoyed playing with that until he broke it on Saturday. Sunday we went to friends for dinner. They had cooked salmon that Alasha and Dustin had brought from Alaska. It was delicious! Yong was introduced to a dog for the first time and after some initial apprehension, had a great time throwing toys for him to fetch. Jen and Yong enjoyed playing with the children that were there, too.
Pretend fighting with
nalgene bottle swords and bowl shields!
It seems like the only great difficulty we are having is at nap and bedtime. Yong hates to go to sleep. Once he falls asleep he is fine. It is the getting him down that is stressful. Hopefully as his body adjusts to the Pacific Time Zone, it will get easier. We have him sleeping in the same room as Jen and that is supposed to make it easier for him to transition.
We are truly just beginning - but we believe that the best is yet to come.
