July 2004

July 1st
This past Thursday was an okay week for us. The car handled fairly well and we managed to climb into the top 20 in points. We started 24th in the feature event and finished 17th. Not too shabby considering the fact that we didn't get a chance to practice with the car this week so we had no idea how it would handle in the feature. We would also like to say congratulations to Scott Sundeen in the #36 Limited Sportsman on his second feature win this season. With all these 36's finishing in first place, we hope the number's lucky and we're next!

Well, this week was a big week for the mini stocks.  It was our 30 lap feature; normally we only run 15 lap features o this was a big deal for us. Once we arrived at the track we found out that the minis have qualifying heats.  Anytime we hear that there are going to be qualifying heats for the mini stocks the night is always a little more stressful, the heat’s add one more chance for something to go wrong with the car, unfortunately for us we ran into some problems in our heat race.  We started last in the heat of about 15 or so cars, we worked our way up to the middle of the field and thought we were all set with a decent qualifier.  Coming out of turn three on the final lap the axle snapped and we lost our right front tire.  The front end of the care sustained major damage.  We needed and axle, roter, and some other miscellaneous parts.  Thankfully with help and some sharing of spare parts from Andy Publicover and Ron Rixham we were able to get the ball rolling and fix the car just in time for our feature event.  Our crew, Shorty, Steve, and the Sundeen Furniture Motorsports crew also lent a hand…without them we never would have made the feature.   We made it out just as the mini stocks were lining up on the front stretch for drive announcements.  We started 32nd in a field of 32 cars.  It was a long race, we avoided a couple of accidents and by the time it was over we were in 12th.  12 seems to be a lucky number for us, we’ve found ourselves there several times in the last few weeks.  Either way we aren’t complaining coming from 32nd to 12th isn’t too shabby.  Next Wednesday we are back to our regular 15 lap feature, we have lots to do with the car.  We still need to do some work on that right front tire so we’ll have a busy week in the garage.  Oh by the way, did anyone hear us mentioned on 100.1 the Fox by Leslie Wednesday night?  She mentioned the 5th Dimension Racing team and our website.   Thanks for the plug Leslie!  We owe you!

This week came up on us really fast.  We had a lot to do with the right front end of the car this week was a day short because of the races being held on a Wednesday rather than Thursday.  We finished the car at about midnight on Tuesday.  Once at the track on Wednesday we ran two practice heats just to see how the car would handle after the changes we made during the week.  The car felt okay, no worse than it had before.  We started 25th in the feature.  It was a long feature, more accidents than usual, we managed to avoid them, however due to all the braking the car lost it’s front brakes by the end of the race.  We finished 13th…not 12th so I guess we somewhat got ourselves out of that 12th place jinx.  The mini stocks had a long night in tech, when we walked to our car we noticed that they were still being looked at by the officials.  We didn’t find out until Thursday afternoon that due to disqualifications we finished 10th in the feature.  So all in all a decent week with no major repairs for next Thursday.  I wouldn’t mind having more weeks like this one, that’s for sure!

July 29th
Tonight was just okay for us.  The car just didn’t feel right from the beginning, our handling was out of wack so we decided that we would take it easy tonight.  We started 25th in the feature, I think.  We were near the back anyways, with only two or three cars behind us.  We managed to avoid a few accidents and ended up with an 11th place finish.  That was okay, but we would have liked a top ten.  The 11th place finish allowed us to move into 15th in the point standings.  That’s a pretty good spot to be since they will start to handicap the cars and we should be getting some starts near the front of the field in the next few weeks.
