Research Nowhere is the changing role of Customs and Excise more in evidence than in aviation security post September 11th. Customs has been brought into the front line in the "war against terrorism". In the weeks following the terrorist attacks on September IIth a raft of new legislation was passed both in the UK and US. This can be accessed by following the links on the left hand side of the page. To link the issue of national defence to the wider subject of border control, check out the various journalists on the right hand side. As a research angle, linking the changes within aviation security to wider questions about border control will provide some interesting results. Customs in the US, for example, now have the power to take finger prints from travellers arriving from "suspect" countries. These powers have led some commentators to voice concern that innocent people will feel threatened with these new border controls and , by consequence, lead to rise of an "us and them" mentally and incite racial violence. More than any other time in the last decade, customs and excise have been politicised in this new political climate. |
