Bike Riders:

Here are some safety rules that need to be followed by bike riders, no matter how young or old, for work or play. RIDE BY THE RULES* Be sure your bike is in good riding condition. Know & obey traffic signs and signals. They are meant for bicyclists too. Keep to the far right of the roadway or stay in bike paths. ALWAYS yield to pedestrians. Never carry passengers. Only 1 rider belongs on a bike built for 1. Know and use hand signals. Never hitch rides on other vehicles. Keep both hands on the handlebars. Wear light colored or reflective clothing when riding at night. Wear a safety helmet. Have a high flying flag on your bike so motorists can see you.

  SAFETY CHECK YOUR BIKE*

Before you ride, be sure your bike can pass the checklist test. Have a bright enough light on the front of your bike for use at dusk or at night. Both your front and back brakes should be in good working order. The wheels should not wobble and tires should have enough air. Check to see if wheel bearings need oiling. Handlebars should be tightened to a comfortable position and handle grips firmly in place. The fork bearing where the handlebars connect to the frame should be lubricated regularly. The chain should fit snugly without any damaged links.

  WHEN RIDING A BICYCLE.......*

You are considered a driver by law. You are subject to the rules of traffic signs and signals just as motorists are. You should be aware of what traffic signs mean. You should be alert to traffic signs. You should know the rules of the road.

Tips for using the Emergency 911 phone number: Try to talk slowly so you may be understood. When describing a person, get and give as much information as possible. If you do not want your name given out, tell the call taker. Be patient and don't get upset when you are asked questions. If you call from a pay phone and you want emergency personnel at a specific address, give THAT ADDRESS or emergency personnel will show up at the pay phone address. If it is a true emergency and you can only dial 911, and can not talk, the police officer will respond to the address the call came from. 911 is the main number to contact help when there is a true emergency. 911 calls from a pay phone are free. 911 calls from a cell phone will go to the State Police Post. R.U.O.K.? The "Are You Okay?" program makes it possible for the Kendallville Police Department to check on you in your home. A call is automatically made at the same time every day of the year. A computer activates the call at whatever time you wish to be called. A voice recording from one of our dispatchers will ask if you are okay.

When God Made Police Officers...... When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one." And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order? A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform. He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day. He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands." The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way." "It's not the hands causing me the problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have." "That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks,'May I see what's in there, sir?' (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of his head for his partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be all right ma'am,' when he knows it isn't so." "Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow." "I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck." The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked. "You bet," said the Lord, "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes, recite Miranda warnings in its sleep, detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop... and still keeps its sense of humor. This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects." Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model." "That's not a leak, "said the Lord,"it's a tear." "What's the tear for?" asked the angel. "It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice." "You're a genius," said the angel. The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," he said. Anonymous reprinted from American Police Beat
