Grandview  Cemetery,  Fayette, Iowa
Alphabetical List of the  first burials.

....You are looking east and standing about in the middle of Section A.   One of the original entry trails into Grandview turned west off College Hill road and climbed gradually up the north face of the hill on the left (north)  of this pic, exiting on top just to the right of the "reddish" tree in the top middle of the pic.  The road then ran along the north side of Section A, or to the left side in this pic, and came to the far west end or front of Section A or to your back as you look at the pic. Remember in the early decades the west end of Section A, WAS the front of Grandview, and Section A, WAS Grandview.
....It can be assumed the first entry into Grandview was off the dirt road running along the western hill tops of the between he Westfield and Fayette valleys  from Westfield to the SE, which would also be to your back in this pic.  Probably the most used entrance in the early decades would have been the College Hill trail as by the mid-1860's almost all recorded burials originated from the Main Street area of Fayette, and especially from the furniture/undertaking business on the NW corner for Main and Water Streets.

....The present project is to database the early burials in Section A, starting with the first burial in late1853 and progressing toward the burials in other sections.  Grandview contains many of the people who became residents of the Fayette Valley and would live out their lives helping to make it a prosperous agricultural and educational pioneer community from the 1850's.  Starting in the 1960's ecomonic times changed to big corporate businesses, and small communities decreased in economic viability as communication and transportation became rapid and extensive, while the country's population was doubling every 35+/- years at an every accelerating negative environmental force.
....Many of the past residences have returned to Grandview for burial, as their final connection to the Valley of their past.  As one reads the names on the marker stones and studies the history of the Fayette Valley, many of the Surnames are remembered.

....You can help the Grandview project by posting any information, corrections, ideas .  I am especially looking for older photos of the cemetery, entry roads and Fayette area to take digitals of and then return.  There is mention to Book Number One in the records of the book copy I am presently using.  I suspicion that there is at least one lost document with early Fayette burial notes.

Surname List of Burials in Section A of Grandview Cemetery, Fayette, Iowa
****Important, to help you understand the info below.  I am placing on a database the information from the original book.  Many times the writing is difficult to impossible in read, or there is incomplete information.  I am entering the material just as it reads from the book.  There are however situations where I have changed the data to make it more accurate because of personal knowledge of a situation/name, etc.  Name spellings are kept as close as possible to the way they are recorded, so you may see a variation from the burial name to the lot name, as those were two different records.  Birth year in not recorded but interpreted from the age, which is usually listed.  The lot number follows directly behind the section number.  Then the lot owner is listed followed by the # of the burial, which is the sequence of burials through time, starting with Martha Alexander being the first burial in late 1853.  Birth place and death place are generally not listed until the early 1900's, when more info will be recorded.  Contact me by email if there is a birth/death place listed and you cannot determine which it is, and I will look it up.  Likewise, death cause usually was not listed until into the early 1900's when more items were recorded.  One note on death cause, "Consumption" was the term for TB, which seemed to be fairly common in young females in their late teens, when it was recorded.  If there was something recorded in the "relatives" column it was recorded exactly as written.  The notes area includes items recorded in the book which apparently may have often been other relatives, or close friends, plus sometimes explanations.  In that column on the database, I included any little extra items of my own, or other information.****It is slow going, plus I am working on other things, so I will list the years posted to date at the start of the list.

List Key:  Surname, Given Name, Birth Year,  Age at death, Buried in Sec, Lot Number of burial,  Lot Owner,  # of Burial in sequence,  Birth Place, Death Place , Death Cause (consumption is their name for TB) , Relatives (could be friends or relative), Notes (notes in the book or items of info I have added, bz, 2001).

You are looking from the base of College Hill to the west/northwest along the base of the hill at the south end of Main, King and Mechanics Street,  Fayette, Iowa.  In the 1875 Pictograph above it is basically the hill at the ends of King and Mechanics Streets.  You can see the Pine Trees in the  upper center of the pic, which are in along Section A of Grandview Cemetery, the place of the first several decades of burials for most of the Fayette and Westfield Valley residents.  The field area to your right was one of the first "fenced" in fields in the area.  The fencing material would have been a split rail fence probably of the type you can visit in virtual fashion on  the photo albums regarding Lincoln's New Salem Village.  If you want to go back in time to see what early Westfield and Fayette would have looked like, you need to visit these albums.  The log structures and the life style in the Valley would have been very similar in much of Fayette County from the late 1840's for at least a couple of decades.  The field to the right was at one time a hops yard.  Before and after that time the field has generally been planted to row crops.  You can enter Abe albums through the IowaZ Sitemap.
