Fayette, Iowa
 Grandview Cemetery Lots

....From the West you are looking into Section A of Grandview Cemetery.  In late 1853, when the Cemetery was opened, this would have been the primary entrance off the road coming from Westfield or the Klock's Island and flats around the new Hwy 150 bridge of today.
....You can see the Robertson Memorial on the left and the Chapel in the background, both of which are 1900's placements.  By the late 1850's, it can be assumed  the College Hill trail into Grandview had been put into operation as most of the burials would start to be transported out the Main Street area of Fayette by the 1860's.
....You are looking at the original front of Grandview, but in the late 1930's the other end or east side would have a new major entry built and the back would become the "front" of the Cemetery from that time on.

You will find on this page

....From 1853 until about 1883, all burials were in Section A of Grandview Cemetery in Fayette, Iowa.  Section A, B, and C, were the utilized areas in Grandview up to about 1900.  It can be speculated the first entrance into Grandview was from the Westfield road just to the left or west of the table which ran on a diagonal down from Westfield and joined the road up College Hill just to the south of the cemetery or about 200 yards below the K.  College Hill road would come up the hill and run past the right or east side of Grandview.
....Again, it can be speculated that the trail mid-way up College hill, built into the side of the north face of the hill on which Grandview was located, was not opened until a number of years after the Westfield entrance and Grandview came into being. It would take time and effort to hand cut and built such a trail, after the need was apparent as Fayette began to grow by 1856 or so, and Westfield declined.
....Main Street Fayette would be down in the valley, one mile north of the top of the table.  Westfield would be one and a half mile N/NW of the corner with the I in the table. In the late 1930's an entrance was built just to the left of the Soldier's Monument, and this became the main entrance until into the 1980's when this entrance was closed down in favor of one coming in from the Old 150, across the field from the south, going by the west end of Section K.

You are looking east along the north face of the hill overlooking Fayette to the north.  The trail up to Grandview from College Hill exited the woods about at the left side of this picture or at the back (east) of Section A, and ran long the north side of Section A, all the way to the 1850's front of the Cemetery, which today is the back.

Lot Owners in Section A of Grandview Cemetery, Fayette, Iowa
This is the East End or back of the cemetery from 1853-1839.

Unmarked burials occurred at the east end of Section A and may have been considered Potter's Field.   It is not known if there were burials covered up by the chapel construction, or if any of the unmarked burials were relocated.  Due to the numbering sequence it would appear the last two rows were added later.       The Chapel would be built here in later years.

 Robertson Memorial

This is the West end or front of Grandview from 1853 to about 1939, with
entrances coming in from from the Westfield road and the College Hill trail.

....rom the West you are looking into Section A of Grandview Cemetery.   The Robertson Memorial on lots 20 & 21 is in the lower left corner.   In 1853, when the Cemetery was opened, this would have been the primary entrance off the road coming from Westfield (Klock's Island area and flats).   You can see the Robertson Memorial on the left and the Chapel in the background, both of which are 1900's placements.  By the late 1850's, I have to assume the College Hill trail into Grandview had been put into operation as most of the burials would start to be transported out the Main Street Fayette area from that time forth.  You are looking at the original front of Grandview, but in the late 1930's the other end or east side would have a new major entry built and the back would become the "front" of the Cemetery from that time on.

LIST OF BURIAL LOTS IN SECTION "A" OF GRANDVIEW CEMETERY, FAYETTE, IOWA, SHOWING LOT NUMBERS AND LOT OWNERS, PLUS THE DATE AND NAMES OF BURIALS IN EACH LOT.
....Burials without lot numbers (A 000) probably were buried in on-marked graves at the east end or back of Section A, in unmarked graves, or other location called Potter's Field.  The location of Potter's Field is only speculation, it my have been father back to the east or even to the south of Section A.  It would have to be assumed some of these early unmarked graves were very near Section A, and thus probably in the area of some future section of Grandview.  Whether these burials were removed, discovered, or ignored during future cemetery development is not known.

****
....Important, to help you understand the info below.  I am placing on a database the information from the original book.  Many times the writing is difficult to impossible in read, or there is incomplete information.  I am entering the material just as it reads from the book.  There are however situations where I have changed the data to make it more accurate because of personal knowledge of a situation/name, etc.
....Name spellings are kept as close as possible to the way they are recorded, so you may see a variation from the burial name to the lot name, as those were two different records.
....Birth year in not recorded in the book but is interpreted from the age, which is usually listed.
....The lot number follows directly behind the section number.  Then the lot owner is listed followed by the # of the burial, which is the sequence of burials through time, starting with Martha Alexander being the first burial in late 1853.  Birth place and death place are generally not listed until the early 1900's, when more info will be recorded.
....Contact me by email if there is a birth/death place listed and you cannot determine which it is, and I will look it up.  Likewise, death cause usually was not listed until into the early 1900's when more items were recorded.  One note on death cause, "Consumption" was the term for TB, which seemed to be fairly common in young females in their late teens.
....  If there was something recorded in the "relatives" column it was recorded exactly as written.  The notes area includes items recorded in the book which apparently may have often been other relatives, or close friends, plus sometimes explanations.  In that column on the database, I included any little extra items of my own, or other information.

The present project is to database the burials recorded in the original book  you can help the Grandview project by posting any information, corrections, ideas .  I am especially looking for older photos of the cemetery, entry road and Fayette area to take digitals of and then return.  There is mention to Book Number One in the records of the book copy I am presently using.  I suspicion that there is at least one lost document with early Fayette burial notes and may more.
