Doug Jones may not be recognizable when you
see him but he's played some of the most recognizable and unforgettable
characters in fantasy, science fiction, and horror films today. Billy
Butcherson-Hocus Pocus, Abe Sapien-Hellboy, El Fauno/Pale Man in Pan's
Labyrinth, The Silver Surfer-Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Ice
Cream Man-Legion, to name a few. He's incredibly friendly, sweet, and
approachable. So if you ever have the chance to meet him don't pass it up!
Below is a fun little interview I recently had the pleasure of doing with him!
1. Billy Butcherson from the Scary movie
Hocus Pocus is one of my favorite characters
that you've portrayed. What are some of your
favorite horror movies and why?
Well, I'm not a
huge fan of blood splatters on the wall or teenage camping
trips where naughty kids are getting picked off one at a time
by a masked psychopath. I lean more toward the classics from
days of old, like FRANKENSTEIN and THE MUMMY with Boris
Karloff. Funny can work for me, too, like AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN
LONDON or SHAWN OF THE DEAD. And I also like the more subtle,
psychological thrillers like THE SIXTH SENSE or the critically
acclaimed indie I was fortunate enough to have a cameo in,
ABSENTIA.
2. What do you
feel makes a good horror movie?
A good horror
film for me comes with two very simple words. Suspense and
surprise. If you can keep me guessing with tension in the air,
and startle me with something I didn't see coming, that will
account for a good time at the movies!
3. If you
could meet one person, living or dead, who would you want to
meet & why?
It might take us
off the horror topic, but I would love to have lunch with
Charlie Chaplin. To get a glimpse of this comedic genius in
person, and maybe discover where his creativity came from,
what rattled around in that intricate mind of his, all that
over lunch so we could have a gross-out contest with "See
Food". Or maybe I could accomplish the same thing with horror
in the equation if I was a zombie, and chased him down to eat
his fascinating brain -- same mission accomplished!
4. Is there a
particular monster that fascinates you?
In the horror
genre, I have always wanted to play a vampire. But while I
would never get cast as a pretty, sparkly one, I'd want to
play Nosferatu or Dracula in a more classic story, maybe even
filmed in black & white. I've also had a love for Frankenstein
since I was a child, and if Guillermo del Toro's dream of
writing/directing his own version of Mary Shelley's book comes
true, I am currently attached to play The Monster. In the
meantime, you can see me as a new creature soon, this summer,
2013, you'll find me as a new series regular addition to the
cast of FALLING SKIES on TNT. I play a new alien on the show,
and by all appearances, it looks like I'm here to help. But
we'll see how that unfolds.
