Tale of the Dwarven History

*As told by High Elder Dolph Wildbeard*

Back when the world was young and gods walked as men there was a great battle in the sky. A rogue red dragon (Note: Loerth) had decided that he wanted to be the most powerful being in all the lands, so he began to systematically massacre all of his kind, regardless of color. This was the Great Dragonfire War. It was fought up and down the center of Southern Loerth and rendered it a scorched and barren place that, 300 years later is still recovering. Soon enough, the other dragons in their ageless and timeless wisdom, put aside their hatred and anger at one another for a larger hatred, a deeper anger - for the murderer. They banded together and faced Loerth down in a battle fit for epic poetry and frightful bedtime stories. The rogue was successful as he cheated, bringing an army with him armed with spells and enchanted weapons.

What he did not realize, however, was that he may have won the day, but the war was still on. Before they went to meet their enemy, the other dragons had time to place their eggs, all colors intermingled, into a cave deep in the mountains with a beautiful gold dragon to guard them (Note: Materna). They placed her in a magical sleep to end only when called by 'The One Who Will Awaken Her..' They received an oath by Otho that his people would make their home in the mountain and guard the helpless eggs and sleeping guardian, lay their very lives between her and the rogue.

PC Information

Follow the Core Rulebook and any other Pathfinder materials your GM allows when constructing your dwarf. As a boon from Otho each one starts out with a Masterwork weapon at the price of a regular one (usually a warhammer of some sort) and 1 skill point in Profession: Blacksmithing for free.

Social Hierarchy

The dwarves are led by a Council of Elders They are the High Elder and a representative of each playable class as well as a blacksmith (most respected of the professions and beloved of Otho. The final member is elected by the commoners to represent their interests.

Note: Not all female dwarves have a beard but to be an eldera female must have a beard that at least touches her breastbone.

Current Council

Dolph Wildbeard - High Elder

Llewelyn Spellhammer - Mage

Marla Elvenkin - Cleric

Fillia Cutpurse - Rogue

Tommen Hammersmith - Blacksmith

Jessa Commonkin - Elected Commoner

The remainder of society chooses their profession and picks a last name that reflects their choice. The only clear thing is that the ones chosen to guard Materna are the most respected in the community while those that guard and dig tunnels are the most needed.

Anyone who leaves the mountains is put under a geis of the GMs choice that keeps them from revealing anything about the mountains or Materna.

Afterlife

Dwarves are a notoriously long-lived race. They are not immortal, however, and when a dwarf dies they are said to go to Otho's Great Hall to sit at the table with Otho himself and drink ale to celebrate those left behind

Note:

If one wants to add a mystical weapon that can kill or harm dragons they can add this bit. Personally, I have a PC from Dragonlance, so that takes care of that:

There are many epics that tell the tale of Otho himself forging great lances for the children of Eliansa to enchant and the children of Leesha to wield of old against great beasts.

Because this was done by Otho himself no one believed themselves worthy to write down the process by which the lances were made or even whisper it in the darkness. It is thought to be one of the Great Secrets held only by the High Elder
