27th - 28th SEPTEMBER 2003

 

Back by popular demand, the world-renowned Ermine Street Guard are returning to the site of the Roman Fort at Middlewich for another fun filled festival weekend of re-enactments and all things Roman.

The second Roman Middlewich Festival will feature on Harbutt's Field, Middlewich.

Highlights of the weekend will be four displays by the Guard. Around the displays, locals and visitors alike will have the opportunity to:

 

Meet the Guard in their encampment

Take part in workshops featuring salt making, mosaics, Roman food and pottery.

Visit the displays of archaeological finds

Take part in Roman related games and competitions

Have guided tours around the sites of Roman Middlewich

See the Brand new virtual reality tour of the Fort

Listen to illustrated talks on Roman Middlewich

Visit the crafts marquee and buy authentic Roman and Celtic reproduction ware

Saturday, September 27

10:30am - The Parade Will Leave from the Cats Bar, Wheelock Street and travel to Harbutt's Field.

11am - Opening Ceremony on Harbutt's Field. Cledford School children will present the fasces( a double headed axe) to the Ermine Street Guard.

12 noon - Invasion by the Ermine Street Guard  Harbutt's Field.

1pm - Performance by the Papa Bears (Patar Ursuis) Band.

2 pm - Chariot Race.

3pm - Battle display by the Ermine Street Guard.

4pm - Performance by the Papa Bears Band .

Sunday, September 28

All events at Harbutt's Field

10am - Roman Music will start the Day with a bang.

11am - The Ermine Street Guard.

1pm - Live performance by the Papa Bears.

2:30pm - Battle diplay by the Ermine Street Guard.

3:30pm - The Papa Bears

4pm - Closing Ceremony, The Centurian will call up the first Citizen of the Town- The Mayor of Middlewich - Alison Roylance White to present her with the fasces ( a double headed axe). This is a symbol of handing the power back to the Town.

All day Saturday and Sunday

* A ballon race from Harbutt's Field * Virtual Reality (VR) Film of Roman Middlewich - this four minute film will be shown throughout the day in the VR centre at Harbutt's Field * Trips on a Roman Galley - from Town Bridge Wharf ( at the traffic lights near St Michael's Church) to the Big Lock and Back again * Display of Roman finds in Middlewich Library * Roman Middlewich Trail - Meet your guide at the VR centre on Hrbutt's Field and you will be taken on a mini tour to uncover the secrets of Roman Middlewich ( tours operate approximately every half hour)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This promises to be a superb celebration of Roman Middlewich at an important regional event, over 10,000 people attended the first festival in 2001 this time we are bigger and better  and we expect more people to come and share this exciting and memorable Roman Experience.
