THE ROMAN MIDDLEWICH FESTIVAL 2001
Over 10,000
people visited Middlewich back in September 2001 and we hope those who came will
not forget the sight of the Ermine Street Guard bearing down on them.
This is a very
graphics intensive page, please wait it is worth it for some stunning pictures
of the weekend.

The festival was a celebration of Middlewich's Roman heritage -
featuring a display of Roman weapons, cavalry, armour, artillery and crafts by
the Ermine Street Guard, a Roman parade through the town centre, Roman and
Celtic market, Roman galley, plus workshops, book-signings, displays and live
music. It turned ou to be a weekend to remember for the whole town, and
admission was free.

Just a few
comments from people who were there that weekend.
I took the family along to the Roman Middlewich Festival and I wanted you
to know that we all enjoyed it immensely. The transport arrangement worked very
well. We used the Park and Ride but had no problems even with four young
children and a push-chair. We had a great time at the event itself. And I've
changed my views about the effectiveness of ancient cavalry operating without
stirrups!

This is just to say how pleased I was to be with you at Saturday's events.
You and your colleagues did a splendid job and I hope the schools will take up
the opportunities they have begun to develop.
In the Library I was impressed with the small display and agreed with your
colleagues on duty that one or two child-size toga would be useful. Could the
high school help? If not I'd like to know.

Many thanks for the warm hospitality of your committee and the people of
Middlewich.
Speaking personally I was pleased to see how interested the people were in
their history and was only sorry I missed so much of Tim Stricklands talk as we
had to go to the site and protect it from the worst of the Middlewich weather!
The weather in the end was remarkably kind to us although not to the words
of the Italian consul ! Fortunately we were well fortified against the Northern
wind by the stirling efforts of your ladies and their excellent breakfasts.
Please pass on my remarks.
