Alchemy, here's one possible answer to your question about the temp jet fuel burns at:

http://www.sandia.gov/media/firetest.htm

and here's a site about designing structures against such fires...

Paradiddle: hopelessly off topic, but, like, if you're a firefighter, shouldn't it have been "flamadiddle?"

Great responses Para (may I call you Para?) In my opinion (TM), only someone who is very comfortable with the solidiness of his or her own knowledge, is willing to say "sorry, not my area of expertise."

In general, tactics employed in wildland firefighting have little use in an urban setting. Shipboard tactics have limited applicability as well. They're all different animals and must be strategized differently.

Where's Jon Up North? He's the resident wildfire expert. Anyway, I'll add a little anecdotal corroboration. During wildfire season here, urban fire depts. are often called in for mutual aid. I hadn't apid much attentoin to how they were deployed until I say a news thing on TV last summer. The urban fire fighters are stationed in towns or near homes for protection. The deal is, the wildland people aren't good at protecting structures; the urban people haven't practiced much with axes, shovels, and bulldozers. So they complement each other-the expertise of teh wildfire folks isn't diluted by having to hang around structures; the lives of the urban folks aren't risked by throwing them into totally unfamiliar situations.

Can't you just hold out a net and have people jump into it? I see them do it on TV all the time.

I like it! I may use that one after the ULMB theme changes.

A little late here, but I had to give props to Paradiddle. Outstanding post!! I really wish, as you said, people who know nothing about a topic would not try to make like an expert, but then it would be pretty boring around here.
