Song of Worship (Kelly Fox)
I ran,
Ran,
Ran out to the hills,
Ebony velvet-cloaked hills,
Bare feet skimming lightly
Over dew-kissed grass
Past silent sober trees
And fragrant golden fields
Ran up and up to the highest point
Still dwarfed by omnipresent mountains
And threw myself to the earth.
I pressed my face to the ground
Clutched it to me
Hearing nothing but my breath
Racing the wind
And the furious pounding of my heart.
One half-savage twist
Now on my back,
Listening to my blood singing
The ancient war-cries
As I stared up at the sky
At the-
Stars
A hundred
Thousand
Million
Trillion
Stars
Forever keeping vigil
Guarding the secrets
Of the endless black emptiness
And I gasped to feel
The Joy
The terrible, wonderful, tearing,
Ecstatic Joy
Of life, of death
Of truth, beauty, and love,
Of the universe in all its spectacular
Glory
And my soul,
A red-hot ember
From a raging fire,
Soared up,
Up
Up away from flesh
Too weak to contain her
To seek out her sisters
The stars
Drawn by the fire
At their hearts and hers
And she saw-
Angels
A hundred
Thousand
Million
Trillion
Shining angels
Singing
Of a glorious chaotic cosmos
Flats and sharps
Sopranos, basses
Octave upon octave
The angels sang
And the hair of their heads
Bound together the Universe
In strands of long silk and gossamer
Adorned by the stars,
Like pearls
And I - she - went
Spinning, turning, leaping
Dancing
Feather-light on that shimmering web
One pearl among many
Rejoicing, praising
The beauty, the rightness
The Song
And the angels smiled
To hear her sing
And the angels laughed
To see her joy
They whispered in her ear,
Singing tender lullabies
They showed her the beauty
They showed her the secrets
They showed her the majesty
And she laughed and she wept
With passionate Joy
And worshipped.
But far below I stayed
Pressing hard against the earth
Tense fingers dug in deep
Nails caked with dirt
As she danced and pulled farther away
I could not follow her to beyond the stars
Flesh cannot bear too great a Joy
I gasped,
Watching her starry waltz
And felt her bonds to this flesh
Weakening
And giving way
Come back, come back
You who have embraced the Joy
Like embracing the wild winds
Come back, come back
And tell me where
Where I might find it
And how
How I shall worship
In this small temple
On this small world
Remember the Song
And sing it to me
Teach me the words
And I will sing it
In the ears
And to the hearts
Of these who walk this earth,
To these dreaming divinities
And they shall wake
And they shall sing
And they shall dance.
And we will know
And we will worship
And we will rejoice
With stars and angels.
Amen.
