We are not telling anyone what they should or shouldn't read or write. We are expressing our opinion and trying to make a difference by issuing a CHALLENGE. We are also not trying to make anyone change. You are your own person, and if you decide to change something due to something we have done, and it's a positive change then great. This site was also created to provide readers a list of places that they can go to and they don't have to worry about stumbling across sexually explicit material
Are you against porn in general or just porn in fanfics?
We are against porn in general and in fanfics where minors can stumble across the material. For those that are old enough to legal view/purchase/own such materials, that is their personal choice. Remember that not all fanfic readers/writers are over 18 or 21 or even live in a state where viewing/posting such material is legal. This site is not stating that porn is bad - but we are out to create awareness in the BSB Fanfic World.
Maybe if you were actually having sex...you wouldn't feel this way
Why do many people attack us by speculating on our supposed 'lack of a sex life'? Why couldn't you focus on what we have to say, not what you believe our motivation is. It's nice to know you care, but my sex life is of no concern to you. If you are to say that my 'lacking sex life' is why I'm opposed to sexually explicit fanfics, you can easily turn that around and say that those who write/read these sexually explicit fanfics are promiscuous nymphomaniacs. (I am not saying that they are, but look at the logic of where I'm coming from.)
How old are you anyway?
We are both in our early twenties, believe it or not. We're not children who can't handle reading about sex and adult themes. We just choose to not read or write them. It's actually an adult decision.
This site is immature and so are you.
We are both in our twenties, but judging by many emails and guestbook entries that we have received, age and maturity seem to have no direct relation. I see a 15-year-old who can come here and logically and intelligently present her opinion, and I see a 20-year-old tell us to kiss her butt. We never realized that we had to be a certain age to have an opinion that matters."
Are you saying that sexually explicit fanfic writers aren't good writers?
Absolutely not! we have never said that those who write sexually explice fanfis are not good writers. We have read stories by some of these writers and some are very well-written. They are very talented writers. However, not everyone cares to read these kind of stories - just like someone might only like to read sexually explicit fanfics - but we feel that there's not much worse than a great story that crash lands when the characters are hopping into the bedroom after the second chapter.
Get off your soapbox! Do something constructive!
We never realized that we forced you to come here and read what we have to say. Yes, we are doing something constructive - it's called STANDING UP FOR SOMETHING WE BELIEVE IN! We are not here to preach. You came to this site for a reason and if you felt the need to read what we have said and felt the need to leave a message, then GREAT! Your acknowledgement of this site, of this challenge, and of us gives us something that you don't want us to have: POWER. Obviously, something we have done (either directly or indirectly) has affected you in some way. Because we decided to take a stand for something that we believe in, we have changed you. And even if you don't agree with us, that's okay.
Why must you single out the peeps at (insert site name here)?
The "What Would They Think? Challenge" was not designed to attack any person/site/fanfic. This challenge was designed with Backstreet Boys fanfics in mind - there are many sites with fanfics out there that do not feature the BSB or any other musical group. (i.e., Star Trek, Pokemon, etc.) While you may not like reading sexually explicit fanfics, not matter what the topic, this site in no way pertains to any fanfics that do NOT contain the Backstreet Boys. The determining factor in this fanfic challenge is that the Backstreet Boys - and their friends, familys, and entourage - are all REAL PEOPLE. As far as I know, Captain Kirk and Ash are entirely fictional characters.
What about Freedom of Speech?
First, some definitions:
* Pornography : obscene art, writings, etc.
* Obscene : offensive to modest sensibilities (said of words, pictures, etc.); indecent, lewd.
* Obscene, pornographic : Obscene means highly offensive, and may refer to standards other than sexual; pornographic refers specifically to material that is intended to stimulate sexual thoughts.
(All three definitions taken from The New American Webster Handy College Dictionary New Third Edition.)
Here is some legal information for you to read too:
* "The standard which the [Supreme] Court thereupon adopted for the designation of material as unprotected obscenity was ''whether to the average person, applying contemporary community standards, the dominant theme of the material taken as a whole appeals to prurient interest.'' The Court defined material appealing to prurient interest as ''material having a tendency to excite lustful thoughts,'' and defined prurient interest as ''a shameful or morbid interest in nudity, sex, or excretion.''"
* "The prevailing opinion again restated...that, to be considered obscene, material must
(1) have a dominant theme in the work considered as a whole that appeals to prurient interest,
(2) be patently offensive because it goes beyond contemporary community standards, and
(3) be utterly without redeeming social value."
* "By a five-to- four vote the following Term, the Court in Paris Adult Theatre I v. Slaton adhered to the principle established in Roth that obscene material is not protected by the First and Fourteenth Amendments even if access is limited to consenting adults."
* " Because of the inherent dangers in undertaking to regulate any form of expression, laws to regulate pornography must be carefully limited; their scope is to be confined ''to works which depict or describe sexual conduct.''
* The law ''must also be limited to works which, taken as a whole, appeal to the prurient interest in sex, which portray sexual conduct in a patently offensive way, and which, taken as a whole, do not have serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.'' The standard that a work must be ''utterly without redeeming social value'' before it may be suppressed was disavowed and discarded.
* The Court in Miller reiterated that it was not permitting an unlimited degree of suppression of materials. Only ''hard core'' materials were to be deemed without the protection of the First Amendment; its idea of the content of ''hard core'' pornography was revealed in its example of the types of conduct that could not be portrayed:
(a) "Patently offensive representations or descriptions of ultimate sexual acts, normal or perverted, actual or simulated.
(b) Patently offensive representations or descriptions of masturbation, excretory functions, and lewd exhibition of the genitals.'' Portrayal need not be limited to pictorial representation; books containing only descriptive language, no pictures, were subject to suppression under the standards.
Do you really expect us to believe that Nick Carter made that comment about this site?
No, because we wouldn't believe it earlier. As we posted under Nick's comment, the person who made this statement is NOT Nick Carter. This Nick is a friend of ours who we asked to give us one guy's perspective on the situation since we know he's read fanfics before. And in response to an email we received, YES, I do have a friend named Nick. I also have friends named Kevin, Alex, Brian, and there are even a few Howards out there too.
Why do you bother with this campaign when you know that the only people who are against this are teenyboppers who are just learning how to write? Everyone knows all the good authors out there write about mature situations.
Why do people think that all the talented writers out there use sex in their work? I don't think that is the case. People are always emailing us telling us that we can't handle the maturity of writing about...oh...sex for example. You know what? We don't buy that one. Sex doesn't make us uncomfortable at all. In many cases people are including sex in their stories because it is a secret fantasy of their own. That's fine that you have these fantasies...but why post it on the Internet? And as for all the good authors writing about sex...NO! There are plenty of mature fans out there who write well...who don't feel the need to exploit the boys. Just check out our Supporters page.
