THE COVENANTS
Introduction:
The Covenant of Redemption:
The Covenant of Works:
The Covenant of Grace:
The Covenant of Grace is a covenant with man in Jesus Christ. It is a covenant where God chooses those who He will regenerate and gives them the ability to have faith in Jesus Christ. Upon possession of faith, God justifies them, based on the imputation(the attributing) of their sins to Jesus Christ, who died to pay their penalty on the cross of Calvary. Continuing, God justifies them, based on the imputation(the attributing) of the righteousness of the perfect sinless life of Jesus Christ to the account of the believer. This two-part transaction completes the covenant and gives the believer eternal life based on the works of Jesus Christ.
Summary:
The Covenant of Redemption was a promise of God to redeem fallen man. It was made before time began.
The Covenant of Works was a covenant between God and Adam. Adam representing all mankind, fell. He chose not to keep the command of God. Therefore, a sinful nature and spiritual death in sin was passed on to mankind.
The Covenant of Grace was a covenant in Jesus Christ. Our sins were imputed to Jesus Christ who died for them on the cross, and His righteousness based on His perfect sinless incarnate life is imputed to those God chose before time began. A free gift, salvation goes to those that believe, to those that have faith in the person of Jesus Christ based on His life, death and resurrection.

Hebrew:8,10
"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:"
1. The Covenant of Redemption, 2. The Covenant of Works
3. The Covenant of Grace.
Other covenants within the framework of these three also exist. The Abrahamic and The Mosaic are the two most well known. The Abrahamic is a covenant of grace and the Mosaic is a covenant of works. We will look at the three great covenants from which all the other covenants are developed.
“…in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,” Titus 1:2
Before time began, God promised to bring eternal life. Now, before time began who could God have promised to? Only the Godhead existed before time, therefore, God covenant with himself, Father, Son and Holy Spirit to redeem man. Redemption is a trinitarian activity.
When man was created, God put Adam in the garden and covenant with him. This covenant was a conditional covenant of works. Adam was blessed if he kept the covenant, but was cursed if he did not. Adam was also the representative for all humanity in this covenant with God.
“Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man , saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’” Genesis 2: 15-17
