The Lord’s Supper
by Joe Slowiaczek
Mt.26:26,27,28 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
FOUR VIEWS:
-
Roman Catholic View-Transubstantiation:
Transubstantiation states that the bread and wine actually becomes the body and blood of Christ as it is again sacrificed and offered on the altar of the church to atone for the sins of the partakers. The significance is that participation is spiritual food for the soul; it strengthens participants and frees them from venial sins. This cannot be because the Scripture says, “He died to sin once for all;” (Ro 6:10) “So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.” (Heb 9:28)
-
Lutheran View-Consubstantiation:
Consubstantiation states that the elements do not change into Christ but he is actually present in, with and under the elements. The recipients have forgiveness of their sins and the confirmation of their faith. Participation must include faith or the sacrament conveys no benefit. Again this cannot be because our sins are forgiven whether we partake or not.

-
Reformed View-Reformed:
The reformed view says that Christ is not literally present in the elements, however, based on the statement that the elements are His body and blood, He must be present spiritually. A commemoration of Christ’s death it bestows grace for spiritual nourishment. The partaker spiritually participates in Christ’s merits and brings one closer to the presence of Christ by growing in knowledge and grace. The reformer believes this benefit is implied by the fact that unworthy partaking causes judgment. This cannot be because Christ lives within us. We have the Holy Spirit indwelling. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1Cor 3:16) His spiritual presence is in all believers not in the elements. We are also all blessed by the work of Christ on the cross, that is our “cup of blessing” (1Cor 10:16) the unity of the Spirit through the work of Christ. “There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” (Eph 4:4-7) There is no special blessing or dose of grace given to those who participate in any act or ritual, even the Lord’s Supper. The judgment upon the unworthy is directly relevant to the misuse of the supper that was prevalent in the time of Paul’s writing, which was for the purpose of correction of the church in Corinth. To take that judgment and to imply opposite blessing is reading into the Scripture that which is not there.

-
Baptist View-Memorial:
The memorial aspect of the Lord’s Supper states that Christ is not present in the elements either literally or spiritually. It is simply a commemoration of the death of Christ. The partaker is reminded of the benefits of redemption and salvation brought about in Christ’s death. This is what the Scripture says, “…do this in remembrance of Me.” (1Cor 11:24b, 25b) And “Take eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” And “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” In remembrance, a memorial to the death and resurrection of our Saviour.

CONCLUSION:
The Memorial View is the Scriptural view. It does not add to any of the Scriptures pertaining to the Lord’s Supper and it does not take away from the whole counsel of Scripture.
We do view the Lord’s Supper as “the covenant meal for the covenant people for the purpose of remembrance and renewed commitment.” As we partake, we remember what our Saviour did to redeem us and we renew our commitment to serve Him until He returns. “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” (1Cor 11:26) But there is no special blessing to those who participate only judgment on those who partake in an unworthy manner
“…do this in remembrance of Me.” (1Cor 11:24b)
