STAR WARS COMICS

Welcome to the new section on comics in which I will review the latest releases and look at how they relate to the increasing Prequel storyline.

They are rated out of 5 stars:
* = bad
* * = below average
* * * = good
* * * * = very good
* * * * * = fantastic!

OUTLANDER
Rating = * * * * *

OUTLINE: On his first mission as part of the Jedi Council, Ki-Adi-Mundi travels to Tatooine to find Shared Hett - a renowned Jedi knight thought to be dead. Tricked by Jabba the Hutt, Ki finds himself stuck in the middle of the desert where he is attacked by a Krayt dragon - only to be found by Hett himself who is now the leader of a clan of Sand People. Hett explains his history to the Councilmember but they are soon attacked by Gardulla the Hutt's troops. The Jedi win the battle but Aurra Sing, who has been tracking the Jedi strikes and kills Hett before disappearing. Hett's son A'Sharad - half human half sand person, becomes Ki's first Padawan Learner.
PREQUEL NOTES: This was the first comic book appearance of Aurra Sing and has made it, in my opinion, the best storyline in the ongoing title so far. Aurra's disappearance at the end makes readers want more which hopefully they'll get in the comics as well as Episodes II and III - being played, perhaps, by actress Lara Cox.
QUOTES:
1) AURRA SING: "Sorry I snapped like that. Just feeling a little Force sensitive. That's all."
2) KI-ADI: "Ah, well... As long as no one makes fun of my head."
3) BARTENDER: "My place! It's burning down! The fire!"
AURRA SING: "Take advantage of it. Tibanna Gas is expensive."

4) KI-ADI: "Now, if I were my lightsaber, where would I be?"

EMMISARIES TO MALASTARE
Rating = * * *

OUTLINE: Ki-Adi and A'Shared join other members of the Council on a mission to Malastare to orchestrate a peace deal between two warring factions but find themselves embroiled in further scandal as they become part of an assassination attempt against the leaders of the planet. In an attempt to get the Jedi out of the way the conspiritors arrange for them to meet their deaths in a pod race. Their mission is completed but Mace Windu decides to journey Nar Shadaa to find out who is behind the illegal transportation of Akk dogs. He is joined by Depa Billaba and eventually stop Gargonn the Hutt who is using the dogs in gladatorial battles
PREQUEL NOTES: One major prequel appearance - Anakin Skywalker. He befriends A'Shared at the end of part 1 and warns Ki-Adi-Mundi of the pod racing on Malastare. Plus loads of little things in this, starting with the appearance of the Boona Eve survivors - including Sebulba in Anakin's podracer which he bought from Qui-Gon in the Anakin one-shot. In the second half of the story a woman who could very possibly be Aurra Sing's mother makes an appearance telling of how Jedi took her "angel" away to be trained when she was very young. Quinlan Vos makes his first appearance before going on to have his own storylines - "Twilight" and "Infinity's End". Plus, Star Wars' greatest rogue after Han Solo - Villie - makes an appearance.
QUOTES:
1) DARK WOMAN: "Anyone can follow the path of fear to the gate of anger, and find it an easy march to the house called hatred. Now that the Sith have returned, we'd do well to remember this."
2) KI-ADI: "You did well."
A-SHARED: "Tell that to my jaw, Master Ki."
3) ANAKIN SKYWALKER: "Malastare!? They have podraces there, like on Tatooine!"
4) MACE WINDU (After transport explodes): "I take it that this wasn't part of your plan?"
5) YADDLE: "Drive it, I can -- if reach the wheel I could!"
6) KI-ADI-MUNDI (On Sebulba): "Let's hope it doesn't affect that pod racer's track record."
7) DEPA BILLABA: "While Depa Billaba is alive, none shall harm the head of her master! The Force knows, that head can use a lot of protection."

TWLIGHT
Rating = * * * *

OUTLINE: Jedi Quinlan Vos awakes in a blazing inferno with no memory of why he's there and hundreds of mercenaries on his tail. Joining with the Deveronian Villie he discovers there are bets going on as to how long he'll last on the planet. Upon retrieving his lightsaber he has visions of his apprentice and goes on a mission to find her. The two unexpected partners find that they are linked to a drug smuggling ring which takes them from Nar Shadaa to Ryloth where his cousin and his apprentices' uncle are pawns of a bigger scheme that has begun on Coruscant. His padawan - Aayla Secura - tries to save her uncle when Quin's dabbling in the Dark Side causes his death. They find their target -Senator Chom Frey Kaa who is Quin is about to kill when Mace Windu intervenes, preventing him from falling to the Dark Side... this time. Elsewhere on the Republic capital, Darth Sidious realises that Jedi Vos will be suseptible to the Dark Side in the future.
PREQUEL NOTES: The first post-TPM appearance of Sidious is a major bonus since it shows he is scheming and in preparation for the future. We've yet to see his alter-ego Palpatine but no doubt that will be happening soon. Mace Windu makes an appearance trying to save Quinlan Vos which nicely balances the latter's appearance during Emmisaries to Malastare.
QUOTES:
1) BIB FORTUNA: "Jedi... Do not kill. Jedi Code..."
QUINLAN VOS: "I know no code!"
2) VILLIE: "Homar you murglak! The sight of you makes me want to vomit! You crack lenses on holo projector!"
HOMAR: "Vilmar! Your mother was a bantha and you were one of her less savory droppings!"
3) HOMAR: "I look like a shrouded Polhraz!"
VILLIE: "Don't be absurd. Polhraz never let themselves look so stupid!"
4) DARTH SIDIOUS: "The future belongs to me."

INFINITY'S END
Rating - * *

OUTLINE: Quinlan Vos is sent by the Jedi Council to Dathomir to find out more about the mysterious disappearance of the planet OVa which they believe is linked to the dark-side using witches. He allows himself to be captured in order to find out more and discovers that the wittches are using native creatures to open The Gateway to Infinity which they plan to use to wipe out Coruscant and the Jedi who inhabit it. With the help of the leader's daughter, Quin stops the machines and destroys the Gateway. Taking his new companion back to Coruscant, despite her link to the Dark Side, he accepts that the light is within everyone - including himself.
PREQUEL NOTES: Not much other than an appearance by Mace Windu and fellow Council Member Saesee Tiin who discuss sending Quin on the misson to Dathomir.
QUOTES:
1) CREW MEMBER: Captain - before I die... I just want you to know something... I've always hated you!

STARCRASH
Rating - * * *

OUTLINE: A young Jedi called Yoshi Raph-Elan's ship crashes on a remote planet where he attempts to save the people and a princess from the clutches of an evil droid army with only his wits and a broken lightsaber. Disguised as a servant Yoshi must prevent the princess' marriage to an evil slug-like alien. Facing a huge droid he saves the day only to discover he isn't the person destined to save the world, but the woman he rescued.
PREQUEL NOTES: None really - it's a complete stand-alone story. Style-wise it's more "Legend of Zelda" than "Star Wars", right down to the native people having pointed ears! On another note, it's written by Buffy scribe Doug Petrie so I've gotta say, Yoshi reminded me so much of Xander it's scary!
QUOTES:
1) PRINCESS: Who are you?
YOSHI: Uh... heh. It's a funny story actually...
2) YOSHI: You sure you want out of this? 'cause that is one good-looking guy.
PRINCESS: Drop dead, Jedi.
3) YOSHI: I am not her majesty's servant! I am... I am... her husband! What do you think about that?!
4) SKEETER: I'd hate to blast your heads off as I'd be the one to clean up afterward.
5) PRINCESS: I thought Jedi were humble.
YOSHI: First day on the job.

THE HUNT FOR AURRA SING
