Body Mass Index:
To be considered for this surgery, a person must meet one of the following
requirements:
- The person must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more.
- The person must have a life-threatening or disabling condition caused by
or made worse by his or her weight and have a BMI of 35 or more.
- This surgery is usually done for people who are considered "morbidly
obese" or 100 lbs. or more over their ideal body weight.
- The person must have been obese for at least 5 years.
- The person must not have a history of alcohol abuse.
- The person must not have depression or another major psychiatric disorder.
- The person must be between 18 and 65 years of age.
