When Eon was born, his parents had gotten divorced during the pregnancy. His father lived in Paris and he was born in Lyon with his mother. He lived alone with his mother until he was about 5 years old. At that time, his father moved back in with them. His father and mother were desperately making phone calls around for a reason that escaped James. They started moving around a lot, eventually moving to America and moving around a lot there, before finally settling in Barstow.

When he was older, around 15 years old, his parents confessed the reason to him. Apparently, just before his father moved back in with them, they had found out that James' brother (who James had not heard of before this point) was a very powerful mutant, and they had been convinced to give him up. Almost immediately, they regretted their decision and invested a lot of the family's money into trying to get him back. They had finally caught word that they had moved his brother, (who he had found out was named Robert), to America, so they came here to find him. After years of searching, they had to give up because they didn't have the money to move again, and they had to worry about James now.

In the meantime, James found that he too was a mutant. He was doing a history report one night that was due the next day and had no idea what to write it about. As he pondered it, a purple portal opened up behind him. He inspected it, walked through it, and found himself in the era he was studying, the Civil War. He now had plenty of time to write his paper, and he had to spend a few days figuring out how to get back. After crossing through numerous points in history, he finally arrived back at home and turned in his paper. He got a B.

Years went by without incident. Then, it happened. A simple party and a simple pizza order turned into a moment that would impact the rest of the family's life. When the pizza arrived, a strangely familiar person showed up to deliver it. The parents, even though it had been something like 13 years, instantly recognized him. They ran to embrace him, but he wouldn't allow it. After many harsh words and the destruction of a good portion of the side of the Bicket house, Robert was gone. They didn't see Robert again until he was on the news, announcing that he had been the Phantom (a local superhero) and now he was starting a superhero team. James, wanting to be closer and get to know the brother he never knew, knew he needed to join the team. Robert denied it, but his much nicer fiancee, Blizzard, allowed him into the team.
