Game Review

Hesperia Christian opened its 2003-2004 Agape League season with a solid although certainly not electrifying 66-43 win over the host Royals of Victor Valley Christian. The Patriots jumped out to an early lead with threes by team captains Josh Hamilton and Trevor Wagstaffe. At the quarter it was HCS 18-11. Great defense by soph Billy Hague prevented VVC star Chris Gambill not get into a rhythm in shooting threes. HCS capitalized on Victor Valley Christian mistakes and had many of their 17 steals in as HCS led 35-23 at the half. Lorne Barton and Mike Petersen got VVC big man Trey McCraig in foul trouble and he became ineffective under the basket. Backup Sean Stewart fared no better for the Royals. Both teams were lackluster in the third quarter but HCS increased the lead by one point. In the final quarter, HCS just blew by VVC 21-11. Wagstaffe, Hamilton, Barton and Sam Sullivan were the big scorers with 10, 15, 12 and 10 points respectively. The Patriots really put an effort into rebounding resulting in a team total of 41 rebounds. Nate Glass and Mike Petersen had 5 rebounds while Lorne Barton led the team with 9 rebounds. Even HCS reserve forward Matt Boesch played well with 2 points and 1 assist in two minutes of playing time. One flaw in the Patriot performance stood out and that was shooting only 30% from the charity line. HCS players will have to start practicing free throws in their own time to improve that stat and their chances later in the season. Another flaw was the Patriot inability to completely put VVC away. HCS is now 10-5 and 1-0 while Victor Valley Christian falls to 5-10 and 0-1. HCS plays Bethel Christian next Friday in Lancaster.

Game Preview
Hesperia Christian opens their Agape League season against Victor Valley Christian at Victor Valley Christian. The Royals are 5-9 right now while HCS is 9-5 and ranked #4 in Socal by CIF for Div VAA. The Royals main scorer is Chris Gambill. Mundell is their main rebounder and Nuestro can also shoot the three. The VVC gym is always a tough place to play because of their awful floor. So HCS will have to play hard and try to get their house back in order after a disappointing loss to Linfield Christian. The first thing to fix is their rebounding followed by solid defense which was lacking in Temecula. An interesting fact is that HCS was 9-5 last season when the season began.
