Game Review

In a first round battle of 6-2 teams, King's Christian proved to be the better team tonight beating HCS 83-69. The victory by the Crusaders tied the series at 1-1. Senior Crusader star Justin Lott and Mike Washington had 31 and 26 points respectively. The HCS Patriots had no defensive answer for these two stars this evening. King's Christian jumped out to an early 8-3 lead and virtually led the whole game. Late in the second quarter HCS was able to tie the game 28-28 but ended the quarter with a Crusader spurt 36-30. In the third quarter HCS made another attempt to get ahead and actually went ahead by 2 points. But Lott and Washington closed that door of opportunity quickly and kept the lead the remainder of the game. For the second straight year HCS had no answer to defending against Lott's drives and short jump shots. HCS sophmore Mike Petersen and Soph Zach Howard played decently offensively but no one else on the team was able to perform to their standards. Even super star Josh Hamilton scored 24 points, 3 points below his average.Point guard Trevor Wagstaffe and Billy Hague had poor nights both defensively and offensively with Hague getting 4 points and Wagstaffe none. Junior Lorne Barton had a good quarter and a half driving it into the center of the Crusader defense and getting fouled constantly which he converted to points with 5/7 from the charity line. But he had only 13 points in a game he should have gotten 20 points and as many rebounds. As a team HCS was badly outrebounded with the Patriots only getting 22 rebounds. They also had 17 turnovers. 6' 5" Junior Nate Glass had an atrocious night as well getting only one rebound and having 4 turnovers. HCS was able to get some points but could not stop King's Christian from getting their points as well and thus could never close the gap in the late going. King's Christian is now 7-2 and HCS drops to 6-3. HCS now plays Kern Valley on Dec 30 at 12:30 pm at St Joseph's gym.

The downside of that game was allowing King's Justin Lott to get 33 points and Mike Belsen 22 points. The Crusaders are averaging 64 points a game. HCS is now 6-2. King's Christian is 6-2.
