Hesperia Christian opened their first round of the consolation tournament against Kern Valley beating them 64-52. Both teams started out tentatively and were tied 15 a piece after the first quarter. Kern Valley is known as a three point shooting team and HCS' defense prevented them from getting any more than 3 3-pointers all night. Each quarter after the first quarter, HCS won by four points. Scoring was evenly divided among the Patriots with Loren Barton leading the way with 16 points. Josh Hamilton and Zach Howard each had 13 points. Mike Petersen and Trevor Wagstaffe each contributed seven points. HCS' three point shooting percentage was down to only 21% but their free throw shooting was a fairly respectable 75%. Again rebounding was down and it is an issue HCS must address in the new year to survive the Agape League. The Patriots seem to only ever have 1 or 2 players rebounding while our opponents are gang rebounding with three or four players. Turnovers continue to plaque HCS with 16 turnovers this evening. Point guard Trevor Wagstaffe had a high 7 turnovers which is totally unacceptable. In fairness, sometimes HCS players are just not pass ready either. Even Lorne Barton had 2 turnovers which a center should not have. But fortunately despite these problems, HCS got the win and live to play another day. They are now 7-3 while Kern Valley Broncs are 3-7.
