MIS IN PROCESS

When we look at the business landscape of the 21st century we see a new and changing dimension that 25 years ago looked impossible.  Management of information systems is now a huge part of business today, not only in the IT sector but across the board and through every industry. The computer industry has transformed business and businesses must capitalize on computers.

When you first look at the business landscape of the new millennium, you see a completely different set up to those businesses that were forming at the beginning of the 1990’s. Many companies have been set up with the idea that computers are the key to gaining business and it is also a form of promoting business. There is not one big company these days who does not have a dot com address; businesses are now at the stage where they can have a good percentage of their trade over the computer.

When you look at the case of the Dell Computer Corporation and how well they are doing by using technology not just as a business aid but a business tool. The online ordering of computers is an extremely cost effective and excellent way of doing business. The fact that they are using the new telecommunications super highway to do business is also an excellent way to understand consumer needs.  Dell have been the first to implement such a business practice with others now following suit.  The business Dell now does is unbelievably simple but an excellent idea. They have adapted Japanese business techniques, such as Just-in-time process (or JIT) and they have integrated it with an online ordering system that means customers no longer just buy a computer. They are now enabling Dell to see what the consumers want and also what they need to do to improve their services. The customer with Dell is now more than just someone or a company who buys a machine. The customer now becomes a valuable asset in the production process.

Computer hardware and software have also changed dramatically in the last 10 years. It is now the case that a machines life is no more than 5 years and after that its uses are very limited. The market is now coming up with new technologies by the day and a top of the line  machine you bought 2 months ago is now middle of the range and over powered by its newer alternatives. Businesses are now able to trade freely and safely over the internet thanks to new software and hardware making internet business a strong player in today’s economy. It is understood that by the year 2005 (35%) of all business will be done of the internet or through other computer related means.  So what does this mean for business?

Businesses will have to become smart investors in Hardware and software, allowing themselves the ability to trade freely across the world through the web.  Computers will become more affordable and better equipped with dealing with the daily business needs. They will be quicker and more intelligent meaning that businesses will be able to be given up to the minute information on the markets and enable themselves to be innovators in their own industries just has Dell has been.  Information systems and technology are going to become even more widespread in the business world. When looking at the early internet and e-mail sites across the web, you realize just how far the industry has come in little under ten years. Looking to the future it is possible to deduce that every company is likely to have a dot com or a dot co dot UK etc...The internet is now a legitimate form of business and with the value of information technology increasing you see that companies are going to continue to invest heavily in web trading and in E-Commerce.

The Dell case is just one example of firms using Information systems to their advantage and not just relying on them for information. It is likely that we will see businesses using telecommunications for more than just e-mail. Companies will base themselves around their web address and this mean businesses will become globalize and it will be no longer necessary to have a company based in the country they do business. IT will form the backbone of many companies as we go further into the technological revolution.

Management of Information Systems will become and is becoming of huge importance to all firms in all industries, and will continue to grow through out our life times. It is likely that in the next 10 years the whole business market will have changed and will be internet based. Information systems are the business way forward and in order for businesses to survive they must ensure that they are capable of dealing with information systems. Whatever happens within business in the coming years will be to do with telecommunications and information systems. The future is bright for the computer and as long as technology keeps improving it seems that dot com will be with us for a long long time ahead.
