Determination of Fraternal Twins or Identical Twins

If the newborn twins have been identified as
identical, the physical exam must be extremely
careful because identical twins that differ in
size may have birth defects. Identifying identical
twins at birth is important because it can improve
medical care throughout their lives. For example,
if one monozygotic twin develops a disease such as
asthma or diabetes, the second twin has a higher
than average chance of getting the same disease
and should be checked by a doctor.
Twin behavior is differs in identical and
fraternal twins. Identical twins have closer
relationships than fraternal. Fraternal twins
develop their individuality easier since they
differ genetically.
It is best to determine whether the twins are
identical or fraternal right after the delivery in
the hospital. If the twins are male and female,
the twins are Fraternal. If they are of the same
sex, the obstetrician, after carefully examining
the placenta, will send it to the pathologist for
careful examining. If there is only one shared
chorion, they are identical twins. If there are
two chorines, then they may be identical or
fraternal, and a simple blood test can be done to
compare blood cell groups. If red blood cell
groups differ, then the twins are fraternal.
Other characteristics like fingerprints, teeth
imprints, or electrocardiogram can determine if
your twins are identical or fraternal. However,
these tests are difficult and are less accurate
than the blood tests. Comparing the physical
characteristics of each twin may be fairly
accurate.
