Welcome to the "whats new" page of the Iolani Art department. Scholastic Art award winners are listed on the art gallery website. Iolani once again had many more winners than their share. We all take pride in the talents of these artists and their teachers. We are already looking forward to the entries for the year 2000, only four months away. We are also looking forward to the visit by our first Arts Chair, Satoru Abe, internationally renowned sculptor and a Hawaiin Living Treasure. He will be visiting and demonstrating his art on September 30th in the art department. This demonstration will be open to anyone on the campus who is interested. We are expecting quite a crowd and feel fortunate to have this distinguished visiting artist here at Iolani. As another part of the Tam and Young Arts Chair local artist Laren Okano will be taking part in another student project. She will direct and assist in the installation of murals in the library with Mrs. Chung's art classes.

Mrs. Keefer is looking for Parent volunteers who like art and are willing to help her change the displays of the elementary art. Please contact her through the lower school office.

The senior/junior annual art show was a good representation of all the artistic juniors and seniors of 1999. Look for it again next May, 2000. The First Congressional Art competition had seven entries from Iolani 2-D artists. These students were Yvonne Firing, Kris Wong, Mai Yamasaki, Trisha Oyabu, Jennifer Leong, Laura Damerville and Shannon Okuyama. Shannon, Kris and Jennifer were quarter finalists. Congratulations to them and their fine work. Next year perhaps a first place winner?

Lauran Okano, visiting artist, is working with Mrs. Chung's students third and fourth periods. They are doing group murals in the library based upon the song "It's a wonderful wold/somewhere over the rainbow" as sung by the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
