CERAMICS

The ceramic program at Iolani allows both high school and adult(evening) students to experiment with a three-dimensional plastic medium. Students develop an awareness of functional form. A working knowledge of ceramic techniques and aesthetic understanding, promote, excellence in creative design.

The ceramic program is housed in a two thousand square foot facility. Twenty nine tons of clay are processed each year. The clay is mixed on site and fired in three gas kilns. Firing temperature is cone ten. Raku firing is also offered. Thirty three Shimpo wheels and a thirty six inch slab roller are in daily use. A full glazing room with high fire glazes, accompanies this program

DESIGN 3-D
This program encourages student to investigate all aspects of three dimensional space. Exploring the possibilities of like and unlike materials presents good problem solving experiences. A range of materials gives each student the opportunity to create in almost any direction. Techniques in clay sculpting, wood carving, wood construction, wood turning, metal fabrication,welding non firs and firs metals and metal casting.
