Drawing class is based upon the belief that anyone can learn to draw and to draw well IF they are taught a few basic skills and IF they practice what they are taught. It is for the student who would like to know how to draw but has never taken the time to learn or been given the opportunity. It is also for the student who already has some drawing skills but would like to develop them further. Drawing is taught to students in all grades, 7th through 12th. With hard work and daily practice, all students can acquire good drawing skills. A year of drawing is required before taking painting. With teacher recommendation, students who have excellent drawing skills may be able to take painting class without drawing class.
Painting class is a class that concentrates on the painting process. Good drawing skills are a necessity. Acrylics, watercolor and oil painting are all covered. Individual expression is as important as basic skills. Other areas which can be covered in a year are printmaking and other types of relief printing, collage and mixed media paintings. Painting is a requirement for all students interested in taking the Advanced Placement Studio Art Class.
Art from Students that have Graduated
Advanced Placement Studio is a high intensity and very demanding course. It is for the serious Art student who has good organizational skills and a high level of maturity. At least forty projects are required for the final portfolio which is due in mid-May. All projects are submitted to the judging board on the mainland in slide form. Each student must have an area of concentration (can be painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, fiber arts, printmaking, mixed media, film, video or drawing) as well as areas which show breadth of knowledge and skills. Time management is very important and it is expected that for each hour in class the student will find two additional hours for outside work. The student will have his or her own drawing table and area and supplies which he or she can use at any time during the day and after school. It is expected that students will feel that they "live" in the studio while taking this course.
