The intermediate Art 7 sequence and Art 8 programs are designed
as foundation level courses for our young students. The Art 7
sequence course is part of an overall “Arts” program, that also
includes dance and visual education. Students meet for six
weeks in each “Arts” course and are introduced to a variety
of art forms.
The Visual Arts 7 sequence is structured as a foundation
course that will provide students instruction in three areas
of art: Printmaking, Ceramics, Drawing. Students will learn basic
production techniques and develop their own personal style as a means
of creative self-expression. Emphasis on the study of the elements of
design: line, shape, color, texture, form and space will also be
featured. Given this foundation, students will become visually
literate and will be able to communicate their appreciation for
art forms. A field trip to The Contemporary Art Museum is also
scheduled during the six week course. This opportunity is ideal
for students as it heightens their awareness to the diversity of
modern art created by local and international artists.
The Art 8 program is designed as an elective (semester) course
for eighth grade students. This course is an extension of the
Art 7 sequence class whereby students continue to learn the basic
fundamentals or foundations of art. The main feature of this class
is the introduction of a variety of media and techniques. Students
have an opportunity to work with a wide range of materials such as
sculpture, ceramics, papermaking, stitchery, mixed media, acrylic
painting and drawing. In addition, students have an opportunity
to nurture and develop their conceptual thoughts and impressions
for their projects. This creative process helps students gain a
deeper understanding and appreciation for their work.
