Chapter Summaries


*Note: These summaries were written by me. Please don't use them on your own site. I'm sure you can come up with some too. :) Warning: There are spoilers in this section. Don't read about a chapter unless you want to know what happens!


Graphic Novel Volume One

~Duel One: The Puzzle of the Gods
Yugi Mutou is seen trying to figure out a puzzle. Two bullies, Jonouchi and Honda, fool around with him, and Jonouchi steals one of the pieces so that way Yugi can't finish the puzzle. Yugi's friend, Anzu, winds up saving him, and they talk for a while about the puzzle. The next day, Yugi sees Jonouchi and Honda beaten up. Although they picked on him, Yugi stuck up for Jonouchi and Honda and wound up getting beaten up too. He also had to pay his attacker 200,000 yen (about 1,600 US dollars). That night Jonouchi returns the piece he stole in thanks. Yugi finishes the puzzle, is possesed by a dark being from the puzzle, and beats his attacker in a Shadow Game that involves money and a knife (he doesn't die, he just goes insane..). In the morning, Yugi doesn't remember what went on when he was possesed, but he is happy to learn that he has a friend in Jonouchi.

~Duel 2: Lying Eyes
There is a rumor going around that a star is going to Yugi's high school. Jonouchi really gets attached to the idea, but everyone else seemes to doubt it. In reality it turns out to be a TV station doing a documentary on bullies. A worker for the station goes undercover into the school after being assinged to beat up Yugi for the show. The worker, Fujita, tricks Yugi into coming out back, and he starts beating him up on camera. Lucky Jonouchi comes along and saves Yugi, only to get beaten himself. Yugi gets mad at the director for hurting one of his friends, and he becomes possesed by the spirit in the puzzle. He finds the director and challenges him to a Shadown Game that involves a dice. The director wind up seeing in only mosaics as a punishment.

~Duel Three: Hard Beat!
Yugi is on his way to school when he comes across Sozoji, a boy in his class. Sozoji makes Yugi sell tickets for his music "show". If Yugi doesn't sell the tickets, he has to go himself. Unfortunatly, Sozoji is a really horrible singer. Yugi thinks about selling tickets to Hanasaki, a boy that's a shy as Yugi is, but then decides against it. It turns out that Hanasaki has to sell the tickets as well. Yugi takes all of Hanasaki's tickets, getting him off the hook. Yugi doesn't wind up selling any tickets, and Sozoji gets mad but sings for Yugi anyway. After the first song, Sozoji lets Hanasaki in from a back room, and he's obviously been beaten up. Yugi gets mad at Sozoji and his other spirit takes over. Yugi challenges Sozoji to a Shadow Game, and Sozoji loses, causing him to hear his own heartbeat constantly as punishment. Yugi then helps Hanasaki home.

~Duel Four: Jailbreak
After school one day, Jonouchi and Yugi decide to go to a new burger restaurant. Anzu is really against them going, so they decide not to, but Jonouchi has a few ideas about what’s up with Anzu. Yugi and Jonouchi wind up following her around and find out she’s working at the burger restaurant. Anzu gets really mad at them because you’re not allowed to have after-school jobs, but when she says that she’s saving up money to go to New York to learn dance, the two promise not to tell and she forgives them. Suddenly a man who broke out of jail takes Anzu hostage and demands food, beer, and cigarettes. Yugi is drafted to take the order, and he does for Anzu’s sake. Yugi sees the way the man is treating Anzu and gets mad, and his spirit takes over. He challenges the man to a Shadow Game, and the man winds up setting himself on fire. Anzu is saved and falls in love with the man who saved her, and Yugi doesn’t remember a thing.

~Duel Five: The False Prophet
There is a psychic in Yugi’s school, and Jonouchi drags Yugi and Anzu to get their fortunes told. Anzu gets a very good fortune, and Jonouchi gets a realitively bad one. When it’s Yugi’s turn, Yugi says that he doesn’t believe in psychics, and the psychic, Kokurano, curses Yugi and says that he’ll be struck down by falling letters. Yugi pondered about it, and after school he goes to the library to return a book. Once there the book stands almost crush him, but the spirit of the Millenium Puzzle takes over and he saves himself in time. He realizes Anzu is in danger, so he goes off to find her. Meanwhile, Kokurano knocks her out using chloroform. Luckily Yugi finds her before things get too out of hand, and he challenges Kokurano to a game. Kokurano is delerious and says that he can lift the bottle of chloroform with his powers, but when he tries he drops it and he gets knocked out as well. Yugi then brings Anzu away from danger.

~Duel Six: Into the Fire
Yugi’s high school is hosting a festival, and his class is going to make a section for it. Yugi suggests carnival games, and everyone agrees with the idea. They start preparing for the festival, but a senior named Goro Inogashira kicks them out and puts up his giant grill for okonomiyaki (cabbage pancakes). Yugi gets knocked out and finds himself in the hospital wing after hours with Anzu waiting by his side. Anzu starts to leave once he comes to, but Yugi catches her crying and feels sorry for her. He transforms into the spirit from the puzzle and challenges Goro to a Shadow Game. They play a sort of air hockey on the hot grill with ice with a tube of explosives in the center. Yugi is about to lose, but he makes a good shot and Goro winds up exploding. Yugi’s class gets their space back, and their carnival games are a hit.

~Duel Seven: The Face of Truth
Jonouchi finds Yugi after school one day seeking advice. Honda is with him, and Yugi and Honda still don’t get along too well, so Honda is really against Jonouchi saying anything. Jonouchi goes on anyway and says that Honda is in love with a girl, Miho Nosaka, that in their class. He asks if they could head over to Yugi’s grandpa’s store and have a look around for a gift for Miho. Yugi agrees, even though they own a game shop and he doesn’t really see what they could find there. Honda winds up picking a puzzle that you can write a message on and he buys it, but then realizes he doesn’t know what to write. He asks Yugi to write it for him, and Yugi can’t refuse. He writes it and hides it in Miho’s desk, but that day they have a substitute teacher who inspects their desks. She finds the present and opens it, and she starts to put it together. As she reads it outloud, both Honda and Miho start to get really nervous. Finally, Jonouchi and Yugi confess, hoping to get Honda and Miho off the hook. Honda stands up as well though, and she keeps going on. Yugi sees how humiliated his friends are, and he transforms to the spirit of the puzzle. When the teacher puts in the last piece, all her make-up falls off and everyone sees how horrible she really is. She runs out of the room in humiliation, and Yugi turns back to normal, confussed about what happened. Miho wound up turning down Honda in the end.


Graphic Novel Volume Two

~Duel 8: The Poison Man
Jonouchi drags Yugi and Honda to a store called the Junky Scorpion to get a rare pair of sneakers. The store owner says it takes more than money to get them, and he puts a scorpion in the shoe that Jonouchi had to try on. Since Jonouchi wanted the shoes so badly he put it on anyway, but it only turned out to be a trick. Jonouchi payed for the shoes and the group heads to a burger restaurant. On the way there they get mugged, and Jonouchi’s shoes are stolen. The three decide to get revenge on their attackers and start seaching for them. They find them and Jonouchi and Honda beat them stupid. The muggers say that it’s the store owner who sent them to get the shoes back. When Yugi heard that, his other spirit took over and he went back to the Junky Scorpion. He played a Shadow Game with the store owner, who would up getting stung by his own scorpion because of his greed. Yugi turned back to his regular self and took the sneakers back to Jonouchi.

~Duel 9: The Cards with Teeth (Part 1)
The group of four are all at Yugi’s grandfather’s shop, and he’s showing them a new trading card game called Magic and Wizards. It’s a hit in America, and it’s starting to have a following in Japan as well. As they talk about the game, a boy from Yugi’s school, Seto Kaiba, enters the shop. Kaiba says that he’s a master at the game and is looking for some good cards. Suddenly he sees the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, the rarest card in all of Magic and Wizards. Kaiba tries to buy the card off of Yugi’s grandpa, but when he refuses to let it go Kaiba leaves. The next day, Yugi and Jonouchi start to play it in school. Kaiba starts to act friendly with Yugi and asks to see the Blue-Eyes. Yugi agrees, and Kaiba switches the real one with a fake one and then hands it back to Yugi. Later on Yugi confronts him, knowing that Kaiba switched the cards, but not wanting to embaress him infront of his class. At first Kaiba denies it, but then he admits and refuses to give it back. Kaiba hits Yugi and stalks off, and Yugi turns into the spirit of the Millenium Puzzle and seeks Kaiba out. Yugi challenges Kaiba to a Magic and Wizards game, but when they start to play, the monsters on the cards start to come to life.

~Duel 10: The Cards with Teeth (Part 2)
Kaiba plays a card, the Battle Ox, who is much stronger than Yugi’s dragon and he destroys it. The score is now Kaiba with 1500 and Yugi with 1800. Yugi draws Mystical Elf and puts her in defense, and in a few turns Kaiba draws Giant’s Might, which makes his Battle Ox strong enough to destroy Yugi’s Mytical Elf. Kaiba destroys Yugi’s other cards as well, and now Yugi’s life points are down to 500. Then Yugi drew the Summoned Skull, and the tides turned. Yugi destroyed all of Kaiba’s monsters until Kaiba was left with 800 points. Kaiba cheats and “draws” the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, but it won’t attack Yugi. Yugi says that it’s because Kaiba’s heart isn’t in the cards. The Blue-Eyes White Dragon dissapears, and Yugi plays Monster Reborn, and brings him back to life on his side. Yugi wins the duel and Kaiba is trapped in the world of Magic and Wizards.

~Duel 11: The Wild Gang (Part 1)
One day, when Yugi goes to school, he realizes that Jonouchi’s not there. He, Anzu, and Honda look around for him later on, but to no avail. They even go to Jonouchi’s apartment, where they get chased away by Jonouchi’s dad. Finally, after checking all the usual places, they finally see Jonouchi with a pack of guys from Rintama High School. The pack beats up another guy, and Yugi runs up to Jonouchi and asks why he’s doing it and what’s wrong with him. Jonouchi acts like he’s never seen Yugi, some guy punches Yugi because he’s annoyed with him, and Jonouchi walks away with the Rintama group. Later on, Yugi still believes that Jonouchi hasn’t changed, so they go looking for him. Meanwhile, Jonouchi is at a club with the guys. It turns out that he joined them because otherwise, the leader of the group, Hirutani, would have beat everyone at Domino High School (Yugi’s school), and Jonouchi didn’t want that. Jonouchi winds up hitting the guy who punched Yugi, and the other guys get ready to beat him up as well.

~Duel 12: The Wild Gang (Part 2)
Jonouchi winds up getting beat, and they drag him off to the “torture chamber”. Meanwhile, Yugi, Honda, and Anzu are still looking for him. They reach the club that Jonouchi and the Rintama gang were, but they had already left. Finally they split up. Jonouchi, meanwhile, is tied up, and the Rintama gang has beaten him up. He still acting a cocky, so Hirutani takes out stun guns. Jonouchi kicks the guy closest to him away, but someone else comes up to him and shocks him. Cut to Yugi, who’s now drenched in rain, and is freaking out about Jonouchi. He asks his Millenium Puzzle to guide him to Jonouchi. At this point the Rintama gang has nearly killed Jonouchi, but Hirutani orders them to finish him off. Just at that moment, Yugi, who is possesed by the spirit of the Millenium Puzzle, enters. He sets up a plan and challenges the Hirutani gang to a Shadow Game, putting his own life at stake. He gives them a riddle, but to his surprise they almost figure it out. Luckily they can’t figure out the whole part of it until it’s too late, and they wind up jolting themselves with their own stun guns. Yugi turns back to his regular self as Honda and Anzu arrive, and they all watch as Jonouchi wakes up.

~Duel 13: The Man from Egypt (Part 1)
An exibit on Egypt is opening in the Domino City Museum, and Yugi and co. decide to go. They go on Sunday and meet Yugi’s grandfather’s friend, Professor Yoshimori. They also meet with the owner of the museum, Kanekura. Kanekura sees Yugi’s Millenium Puzzle and says that it’s really valuable. Yugi agrees with him to put it on show for a day. Kanekura goes off while the others look around the museum, and Professor Yoshimori explains a lot of things. While they look around, Yugi sees an Egyptian man crying. He goes over to talk to him, and he makes him feel somewhat better. Then they see the Millenium Puzzle on display and take pictures infront of it. Later on everyone goes home except for Yugi, who waits to get his puzzle back. Kanekura, who is about to sell the Millenium Puzzle, is greeted by the Egyptian from before, who says he is a servant of Anubis. He places the Scales of Truth infront of Kanekura and asks him questions, which Kanekura lies about. Suddenly Kanekura’s chair turns into the Egyptian monster Ammit, and Kanekura is eaten. The Egyptian is about to leave when he sees the Millenium Puzzle, and he takes it. Yugi meets him on the way out and asks if he has seen the puzzle. The man freaks out because he was wondering who had the power to finish the puzzle. He uses his Millenium Key to open Yugi’s soul and sees that there are separate rooms, one for Yugi and one for another.

~Duel 14: The Man from Egypt (Part 2)
A different entity from Yugi invites the Egyptian into his part of Yugi’s soul. The man enters, and the spirit asks him why he’s there. The Egyptian says that it’s because he wants to find out the secret of the Millenium Puzzle. He says that he owns two Millenium Items, the Millenium Scales and the Millenium Key. The entity says that the Egyptian can find out what he needs to know… it he’s able to. The spirit says that it’s a Shadow Game. His soul turns out to be a giant maze, and the Egyptian realizes he has to open a lot of doors to get to the real room. He starts looking around, but it’s only trap after trap. After he gets in a tight place and has to be saved by the spirit, he admits defeat and leaves. He gives Yugi his Millenium Puzzle back and tries to explain that Yugi has already helped him, but Yugi doesn’t realize that there are “two hims” (Yugi and the spirit of the puzzle). The Egyptian tells Yugi that he must discover his other self and find the true power of the Millenium Puzzle. He says his name is Shadi, and then leaves to take on another task.

~Duel 15: The Other Criminal
That night Yugi wonders about what Shadi said when his grandpa tells him that Kanekura died. Yugi and his grandfather have a conversation about Egyptian curses, and they decide to visit Professor Yoshimori’s to help cheer him up. They wind up meeting with Anzu and Jonouchi, and the group heads over to the university. Meanwhile, Yoshimori is met by Shadi, who opens his mind with the Millenium Key. He sees that Yugi is coming and changes Yoshimori’s mind to see use him as a puppet. Finally Yugi and company get there, only to find Yoshimori acting really strange. He says he was waiting for Yugi, and then attacks Jonouchi. Suddenly Shadi shows up, and Yugi realizes that it’s Shadi’s fault that Yoshimori is acting that way. Shadi says that he wants to bring out the other Yugi.
