Heroes of Might and Magic II game has been released in November 1996 following an earlier release of Heroes I game.
I believe that the greatest new feature of Heroes II were secondary skills for heroes. To see their list you can click here. They definitely made game more sophisticated. As in next game of these series three levels of mastery could be received - basic, advanced and expert.
Also some creatures became available to be upgraded. For the fist time elementals were introduced as well as different maps' size feature.
This version offered gamers six different towns with six creatures available to be built in each one of them:

| This town is definitely the weakest one. Rangers are the only spot of light
there, but they barely can cover the weakness of other troops. Excluding peasants, the troops are relatively fast, but only
champions are able to attack within a first move with a bit of luck. Paladins are expensive to recruit and to upgrade and still
aren't able to fight really strong 6th level creatures. |

| Sorceress town is quite remarkable for having two shooter creatures.
Dwarves are very good as guards for shooters while phoenix add to speed and damage of the whole army. |
Remark: We have brought you a stats of upgraded creatures. Not all the creatures are upgradable.
